Most respected degree?

Seems like every degree can be looked down on by someone studying something different so, which degrees do you guys respect the most?

For me it'd be
Medicine
Maths/physics
Engineering
Oh, and certain combined ones like PPE and Maths/Physics with philosophy

I think the 'general public' consider Theoretical Physics to be the most 'crazyyyyy difficult stuff' degree, closely followed by Maths.

Medicine has the same level of respect.

Yeah I'd agree, although Nuclear and Astro physics would be close too, mostly because the prefixes sound damn cool.

I mean, "Theoretical Mathematics" sounds crazily difficult, but then you realise.. Maths IS theory...

Theoretical Economics sounds like a beast subject too, along with Theoretical Computation :tongue:

The problem is there is no such thing as theoretical maths . Theoretical physics on the other hand is just loads of QFT

I suppose you could argue that Pure Maths is more theoretical... but then, no, you really couldn't :tongue:

I was just using it to illustrate how the prefix "Theoretical" makes anything sound more difficult, as it is the theory and conceptual ideas which are intellectually challenging, not the experiment-doing.

No, I think most people know that Pharmacy is no way near as tough to get into as Medicine, and so any Medic would cope with it easily.

Biology and stuff are not intellectually challenging in my opinion, and nor are most of the physical sciences.

Theoretical Physics isn't really much of a 'science', as it differs completely from Experimental Physics in that it tries to model and predict rather than observe and interpolate, and that's why it's tough.

All of the highly mathematical subjects are tough - high level Computer Science, Economics, Maths, TheoPhysics etc.

There is a difference between being 'mentally challenging' and being applicable to real world issues.

Understanding disease is the first step to finding a cure or treatment, and anyone making progress in this field has my respect.

Most science based degrees (including maths) are respected, and even the ones that scientists consider easier science courses will at least make non academic people go wow, that sounds hard when they hear that that's what you're studying.

I'd say the most respected non science degree would be law, especially as how competitive it is to get on the course, then to get a good job in that field is.

Oh they're definitely strong and excellent degrees no doubt, it's just personal opinion that physics and pure maths are slightly harder but then I am biased. Definitely worthy of respect though.
