So many choices....

There are so many choices regarding going to University, I'm just not sure what is the right choice for me.

I started on a Law degree, but had to leave due to personal reasons. I'm looking to go back in September 2013. Initially I was going to go to Croydon College, facilitated by London Met as I'd spoken to them and they said they'd give me an unconditional offer if I apply. So, I applied via UCAS.

After applying I felt that, as this is my last opportunity to gain a degree, why should I go to one of the worst Universities? I'm better than that.

So, I added UCL, Kings College, Greenwich and BPP to my UCAS application.

My problem now is that I am now aware that I'm unable to get full time funding for a whole degree, which is a big issue for me. I can get funding for possibly the 3rd year. I can also get funding for a full part time degree though.

So I've now decided that, after wasting £23, I want to go to Greenwich or BPP via part time (it's only an extra one year, and that means I have less modules to concentrate on, so I should get higher marks!).

I think I'm aiming more towards Greenwich as I have taken a look at the societies they have, and there are a handful I'd join. I also like the fact it is more of a campus than BPP. At Greenwich I can complete the degree during the day for 4 years. I would feel like a full time student, just doing a smaller amount of modules in each year - this is a big plus for me as it'd enable me to concentrate more on the modules to get higher marks.

I just need Greenwich to send me the offer, so that I can stop worrying and concentrate on getting some work experience during this time before going back in to studying.

I just needed to get this out as I feel like I'm going crazy!
How many years did you do on your previous degree? If it was only one, you will get full funding.

Also, people told you on your previous thread that going to the best university possible (ie UCL / KCL) for law is really important, but you seem he'll bent on making your own life harder in the long run. I'm still yet to work out why.
On second thoughts, it seems it was someone else who was asking a really similar question. Have a look at this thread http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=39934335&highlight=Croydon%20college%20law

As stated in my original post, my issue is surrounding funding.

I studied for one year at UEL, but left as I wanted to study Law. I then went to a terrible University in London. I had 3 years of funding from this place as I failed the second year, and then had to repeat that year, which I also failed again. I failed the modules due to personal reasons, of which I have evidence and would use under the Compelling Personal Reasons rules. So, I've used 4 years of funding (the full amount).

Student Finance told me that I would be eligible for a Maintenance Loan for a future degree. I would LOVE to go to UCL or King's, however it just wouldn't be feasible, as the loan is £7565, whereas fee's are £9000. I could get a Career Development Loan for living costs, but use some of it for the top up of the fee's. But I don't even know if that is a possibility as an Undergrad student.

Obviously, I'd choose UCL / KCL over all of my choices any day of the week. It was just that Greenwich offers me more flexibility, and I'd get full funding from SF if I study via part time. UCL / KCL might not even want me.

Can't you get a part time job ?

I have a job, which has to pay for my flat and bills etc.

for each year that you proof of compelling personal reasons you should be able to get an extra year of full funding so if you were ill for 2 years and had proof you'd have 2 years of full funding from SF towards a new degree.

Lol then get another job or increase your hours maybe that will help with the funding?

I work full time at the moment. I am left with just £100 after paying out everything each month. And that £100 has to go towards lunch at work and so forth.

I am getting some money in Feb - but that is going to pay off my car & insurance, so that I will be £200 per month better off. I can start to save for fee's then. Once I start University I'm going to have to drop my hours down - but I will still need enough to pay for flat, and the bills there. Plus I'll have the added expense of travel.

When I apply for funding - will the tell me how many years I will be entitled to for the length of the degree, or will they only tell me if I am eligible for finance for that particular year?

I have been ill for 10 years, it is just that in year 2 (and the repeat of year 2) my depression started to get very bad.

I need to wait for SF to allow applications for 2013, so I can apply and send in evidence - this all also depends on whether KCL / UCL even want me at their institution!

they usually work on a year by year basis but they normally work backwards. So to avoid having to pay for someone who may drop out again if you are only eligible for funding for 2 years they pay for the last two years. So as a general rule if they will fund you for your first year then they will fund for the rest of the course.

If I apply for full funding for year 1, and I am not eligible for tuition fee funding or maintenance grant for that year, will they tell me if I'm going to be eligible for any future years? Or would I have to just wait until the next year, to apply for year 2 and see what happens?

Your in a quiet complicated and stressful situation. I don't think they will tell you for any future years only for the current situation. But you have to see

I thought this was the case - which is rather annoying.

SF have told me that they will fund me for part time study, for a maximum of 16 years (my course would only be 4 years part time). They have said if I want to go full time, that they'd give me a Maintenance Loan for the 3 years, which is only £7565 or something each year. So it is only around £1500 each year I need to raise. I could JUST raise that amount this year before going, but I wouldn't be able to raise that much in future years, as my hours at work will be dropped.

Obviously I would MUCH rather go to King's or UCL. If I don't get in to either of those I'll go to Greenwich, as there is nothing I can do if they don't want me there. UCL seems the better option as I'd have a chance at a fee reduction.

Don't make any hypothesis or try predict the outcome. Just wait for the outcome of you getting in to UCL/King's or not. You will only give yourself a headache by over analyzing lol. Besides raising 1500 pounds a year don't seem much of a challenge does it ?

Haha. I already have a headache!

I just worry as getting back to University is pretty important to me, and I do not like 'not knowing'. At the moment it feels like I'm simply floating around in space with no where to go / latch on to.

I know I can't really do much until March. (Deadline of Universities giving you offers, and that is around the time SF is open for 2013/2014).

It doesn't seem like too much of a challenge to raise £1500 really. I've been doing Match Betting for about 2 weeks to try and raise the cash that way. This year won't be too much of an issue, but future years might.

I know they've stated that you will get the maintenance loan, but have they actually stated that you won't get the tuition fee loan?

You might like to have a look at Birkbeck. It's a part of the University of London (like UCL and KCL) but it specialises in teaching mature students who have other jobs, so all of its teaching is done in the evening. It's an excellent university, but it doesn't get much attention in schools or on TSR because it is aimed at mature students. You can do law there either part or full time http://www.bbk.ac.uk/study/ug/law/index.html

I took a look at Birkbeck - I wanted to apply for full time, but I cannot substitute any choices on UCAS now as its been more than 7 days since I sent it off.

SF have said you only get full funding for; degree length +1 -previous. Any years that aren't fully funded you get maintenance loan. As I've had 4 years I won't get tuition fee loan unless CPR rules apply. But some have said I won't know until each year I apply for funding if I'd get it.

Also, when I do the online calculator, it says I'm eligible for tuition fee loan and maintenance loan only - even though I say income assessed and put in my amounts. So I MAY be eligible for a ML and TFL too - we'll have to see!

Although actually... I achieved a Certificate of Higher Education which took 2 years to achieve. Could I argue that an LLB is a higher qualification? Therefore I'd only have to pay for my first year?
