The Student Room Group

potential interest...

Hello,

what does it mean when an academic replies to you that they would be 'potentially interested in supervising your topic'?
What does 'potentially' mean? Hesitation?

Thanks.

It probably means they want to know more about it before committing themselves. Have they asked any questions about it or asked for more details?

I'd say it's a good sign - you haven't been turned down flat at least!

Reply, asking if you should now formally apply via the usual University application form, what word length of formal research proposal you should submit etc

PS.They will also want to know how you are going to fund it....
