 I think if my mum reads it again the print will wear out  yes I was pretty stunned as I thought the second interview didnt seem to go to well as I said some really silly stuff but I guess it was down to nerves  I've started having a look at the different modules we can do, they all look so good ! Have you got any idea what you want to do ?

Not really sure, but I think I'm leaning towards biology of cells, evolution & behaviour and chemistry. I really want to be able to do physiology as well though! Totally lost with all the different maths options though as I enjoy it at A2 level but am a bit worried about whether I'd keep up with the normal maths option at uni :s-smilie: Have you figured out what you'd like to do?

Hello hello, I am a caius medic too, yay  I am so excited! Only 22 more to find

What were your conditions  ?

The only medic I really interacted with (:s-smilie:) was the girl that borrowed my toothpaste...? :colondollar:

Oh haha, were you two staying in the same hall of residence? I didn't actually see many medics around, but I met a couple of linguists, and there seemed to be TONS of architecture people!

Not only is it going to be your student card photo, it'll be the photo used for your student file which all supervisors and staff identify you by  So it's going to be quite widely-viewed.

Noooooo are you kidding?! If I'd known that, I would've actually taken an acceptable photo instead of doing one last-minute in the ugliest blouse I own D:

Yes m411, it is a little annoying. Hopefully I'll see you there

:colone: indeed

A*A in M, FM and A*A in Chemistry, Phys. (In any order). Which is decent I think.

Still can't believe it lol. I'm still considering STEP I just because FM is boring... But that A* is my priority.

Made up for you. (And a wee bit for myself; completes my full set of guesses. :colone: )

I'm also considering STEP I at least.

Now, go get those grades!

Eeek! I didn't realise I'd be signing an enormous book! Is it easy to self-cater?

This is another odd question - but does it matter that there isn't a chapel? I know this seems ridiculous as everywhere else where I'm applying I wouldn't be wondering about whether I had a balcony or not or whether there even was a pretty garden to look out over...

I was just talking to my mother this afternoon about how much loungewear and how many cosy pjs i'd pack!

I'm a history applicant - how have they got on? I've noticed there aren't terribly many (as far as Cambridge goes) in comparison to students - do you sometimes have supervisions with someone from another college? What's the library like? Is it really a 10-15 minute walk into the centre, and how useful is it to have a bike? (I've got v. poor balance and a penchant for vertiginous silly shoes but would be willing to make a compromise for more sleep/speed/greater mobility!)

Are most of your good friends from Newnham or are they from all over the university? Three of my best friends also have offers - Trinity for maths, Downing for English and and Robinson for HSPS (or whatever the initials are!) Did you or other people you know keep in touch with people they came with? I know it is silly to be thinking about this now - nearly a whole year will go by before I might be there!

Sorry about the endless questions! I'm so glad to have been fished, a couple of my very good friends are in the pool and desperately frantic and I'm so glad that's over!

Matriculation isn't scary, just surreal - there are some things in Cambridge that appear to have never changed! It's definitely a weird and wonderful place!

I applied directly to Newnham as it has a good library, the best college kitchens and usually takes several Arch & Anth students (which now forms part of HSPS) as I didn't want to be the only one my college. Newnham library is one of the best college libraries as women didn't use to be allowed in other libraries, so consequently it's better stocked than most! It's got an older and newer part to it and is a nice place to work (although it closes at 1.45am).

Unfortunately I've ended up with the worst kitchen in college, as we're one of only two kitchen without an oven!! However, it's still much better than at other colleges as we do at least have hobs and I can use the oven in the kitchen at the other end of the corridor - despite the lack of oven I've managed to be self-catered fairly easily.

We share a chapel with Selwyn, which is literally over the road, and there are many other churches in Cambridge, so if you're looking to join a particular church then I'm sure you'll find one. I believe we have our own chapelin (sp?) though.

It really is only 10-15 mins into town (depending on where you're going). I think History students have lectures at the Sidgwick site though, which is right opposite the plodge, although even if your's are at Mill Lane you'll still only have a 10 mins walk. You'll probably find though that you get significantly faster at walking due to leaving a bit late for lectures (despite good intentions of being on time!) - I certainly have!

Having a bike is definitely useful, although by no means necessary. As Newnham is fairly central if you don't take up a sport (particularly rowing as the boat house is over a mile away) or have to travel far for your course then you'll probably not need one. A lot of my friends don't have bikes and I didn't come with one, but as I've taken up rowing I ended up getting a second hand one a few weeks in to term. I'm not a great cyclist either (and wasn't very steady at first!) but Cambridge is quite geared up for bikes and the main roads all have cycle paths.

I've not had a supervision with people from another college, as it is college who organises your supervisors in most cases. When you start doing more specialist papers then you probably will do, as they'll be less students and you'll go to the specialists in that area.

I was the only one from my school to come to Cambridge, so came knowing no one really (which is surprising uncommon). I think most people try to keep in touch with those who they come knowing, unless of course you don't get on with them. Most of my friends are at Newnham or doing my course, as it's harder to meet people outside your college and course. If you already know people at other colleges doing other subjects then I'm sure you'll find it easier though.

Sorry for the long reply - I really should learn to be more concise!

Thanks for all the info! Is it ever a problem that accommodation is slightly more expensive than at most other colleges?

Newnham's accommodation costs are fixed for the 3 years you're there and everyone pays the same price, so in theory every one ends up with a good room at some point.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by it being a problem, but if you mean how affordable is it, then Newnham (as well as the uni) have bursaries to help financially worse off students. Admittedly, it is fairly expensive but there are so many grants and bursaries around that I wouldn't worry about paying for accommodation - I believe that Newnham claims no student has ever had to leave due to financial problems!

I have an offer for Engineering with two A*s as well:
A* Maths, A* Physics, A French and A in AS Further Maths

I feel that the high requirements of our offers is due to the increase in engineering applicants this year

Yes, this is what I meant. I guess I'm slightly worried as I'm not a UK student, so naturally not all bursaries and grants are available to me. But what you say is quite reassuring, and I've also read that EU students are eligible for all Newnham bursaries, so it should be fine. Thank you!

You too! So where are you from?

I've just received my conditions. They are A*A*A too with A*'s in Maths and Further Maths. So far, any engineering applicant I've encouter holds an offer with more than a single A*.

Out of interest which college did you receive your offer from? I have an offer for engineering from st. Catz which is just A*AA so it may just be a college thing.
