UPDATE: 35 hostaged killed by Algerian airstrike

A response to the French assault in Mali. Hopefully the SAS'll sort them out.

North Africa is, clearly, extremely unstable. NATO need to establish a large military base there and act on this with a clear strategy, unlike afghanistan.

UPDATE: 35 hostages and 15 Islamists killed by Algerian airstrike. They appear to be using the Putin method: tough but effective in the long term. Discourages terrorists. For the families, it's another story.

There are now reports that there are at least 40 hostages with tens of gunmen, maybe up to 60. They are heavily armed and have mortars and anti aircraft missiles.

An attack by the Algerian army was supposedly repulsed.

Actually, everybody needs to mind their own respective businesses and lay off the Arab lands and not take oil from them. These people died because of the oil. What the hell was a Japanese doing in Libya, for God's sake. Answer: He was doing oil.

Maybe because Algeria needs highly technically trained labor that there isn't enough of in Algeria in order to run the incredibly lucrative refineries?

What are you talking about?
You asked why a Japanese person would be in Algeria.
The answer is yes, oil.
Not to ransack the place, but to work there.
The problem is that you conflated two issues, 1) the international movement of labour and 2) the exploitation of less developed but resource rich nations
