I have to be honest, although it shouldnt be a factor the lack of part-time employment in Durham does concern me. As I need to work to cover a short fall in my funding, it's quite a con. However, I do hear there are a good few jobs in college bars and libraries, and (not certain) a few jobs worth posts in departments. At my college Trevs, there is a shop called 'The Buttery'. As a Butterworth, it's only right they give me a job there!

Oh dear - I live near London so I expect it will be similar for me!

Durham city should give me an offer simply on the basis that I could get there in 35 minutes for 90p on a bus

That's uncanny! I am considering applying for college bar jobs, seems like a sweet way to earn money and socialise too. I would consider getting a job in Sunderland if all else fails as there's always jobs on the go, cheap bus fairs and quick travel wouldn't be too much of an issue

yup train to London bridge the underground to Kings cross. A train to Darlington then change to Thornaby

Hey- this may sound stupid, but I can't understand the change to Thornaby. Whilst I'm not sure if there is a direct Darlington-Stockton line (considering it was the world's first railway, there really ought to be lol), Thornaby is heading away from Stockton. Close, but not direct.

I do have a suggestion, but it probably sounds outlandish- flying. If your from London, I imagine their might be cheap flights to Durham-Tees valley airport,and a taxi to stockton. Not sure on the prices, but domestic flights like that are always advertised on North East tonight.

Jesus I nearly had a heart attack-£402 was the cheapest flight. In addition the airport is 10 miles away and stockton rail is 2.2 miles from Queen campus

You know, I never considered that. If a job was going in Newcastle at a branch or something, where you could work Saturday's or Sunday's, that'd be pretty fantastic! Would say the same of Middlesbrough, but Newcastle is much closer, and Sunderland closer still. I heard you can get jobs within the department as assistants or something, which would be excellent. If you scroll down to neuropartners 2012/2014, there are a number of jobs pre-grads can do and get paid for. Of course, the jobs that require higher qualifications would be much better experience for future employment, but I still think it's class. Not as sweet for socialisation like you say, but I'd rate them!

90P?!? I am in SHOCK! Haha I know this is so unrelated but wow! Buses down here cost me £1.80 single to potentially just the other side of town

What is the point in a lot of places making students do A Levels in Critical Thinking and General Studies! They seem like complete waste of time and effort that could be spent revising for other subjects. Lucky my college do not offer either as optional A Levels never mind compulsory We do some rubbish qualifications too, my college's ploy to get extra funding we were told. I'm doing one in 'money management' in tutorial now and have done some on substance abuse (I can't even explain why) and employability skills.

It is isn't it! I'm rushing my EPQ at the moment, trying to find copious amounts of studies to support my proposal and ones that show no significant effects to provide a balanced argument is proving very difficult!

You have a lot of extra-curriculars, I have never worked so I'm at a bit of a disadvantage! However, I plan to attempt to get a job over summer to help my level of employability. Students who go to Durham University will get a shock when they can't find a job as there are always next to none (I have looked).

That's an interesting work placement, probably the first I've heard to do with consumer psychology It's fascinating, I have often went into Waterstones and been tempted to buy books on that area as it's intriguing! I did work experience over summer last year with The Stroke Association. I loved it, despite it being quite upsetting at times but very interesting learning about the emotional changes, communication and cognitive problems caused by a stroke. I worked with a psychologist in a variety of environments - hospital wards, home visits, group meetings etc

Ah see I neeeeeed a job when I get to uni, will not be able to survive haha, I'm too awful with budgeting!! My plan was (if I actually get accepted at Durham which is becoming unlikely) to look for jobs in Durham but if there were none, to look at Sunderland or Newcastle. Also, I heard that there is a job fair at most universities within the first couple of weeks. Plus, there are jobs going at the university with student bars and things which could be considered (although they are far and few between)

In terms of jobs I get the impression that college bars tend to recruit quite a few people actually so it's not too difficult to get hired (not that I've ever tried). Same with college shops, if your college has one...
