Oh dear - I live near London so I expect it will be similar for me!

Ouch! That's a lot. When did you book it?
Durham city should give me an offer simply on the basis that I could get there in 35 minutes for 90p on a bus

I have to be honest, although it shouldnt be a factor the lack of part-time employment in Durham does concern me. As I need to work to cover a short fall in my funding, it's quite a con. However, I do hear there are a good few jobs in college bars and libraries, and (not certain) a few jobs worth posts in departments. At my college Trevs, there is a shop called 'The Buttery'. As a Butterworth, it's only right they give me a job there!

That's uncanny! I am considering applying for college bar jobs, seems like a sweet way to earn money and socialise too. I would consider getting a job in Sunderland if all else fails as there's always jobs on the go, cheap bus fairs and quick travel wouldn't be too much of an issue

You know, I never considered that. If a job was going in Newcastle at a branch or something, where you could work Saturday's or Sunday's, that'd be pretty fantastic! Would say the same of Middlesbrough, but Newcastle is much closer, and Sunderland closer still. I heard you can get jobs within the department as assistants or something, which would be excellent. Could just be a Summer thing though, but even that is good. I was once recommended this which would fulfil experience and financial criteria: http://www.neuropartners.co.uk/about...ent-vacancies/

If you scroll down to neuropartners 2012/2014, there are a number of jobs pre-grads can do and get paid for. Of course, the jobs that require higher qualifications would be much better experience for future employment, but I still think it's class. Not as sweet for socialisation like you say, but I'd rate them!

Hey- this may sound stupid, but I can't understand the change to Thornaby. Whilst I'm not sure if there is a direct Darlington-Stockton line (considering it was the world's first railway, there really ought to be lol), Thornaby is heading away from Stockton. Close, but not direct.

I do have a suggestion, but it probably sounds outlandish- flying. If your from London, I imagine their might be cheap flights to Durham-Tees valley airport, and a taxi to stockton. Not sure on the prices, but domestic flights like that are always advertised on North East tonight.

The map I was given my college is right outside Thornaby. Queens campus is in Stockton and the nearest station is Thornaby. Thanks for your info, I'll look into flyong but doubt I would. I then have topay for cab or train tickets to the airport

Jesus I nearly had a heart attack-£402 was the cheapest flight. In addition the airport is 10 miles away and stockton rail is 2.2 miles from Queen campus

£402? Avoid that like the plauge lol! And just realised that Queen's campus is by the riverside, so it's clear in my mind now. Seems like a trip to thornaby is your best bet then.

Yeah most departments will offer paid research assistant work which I know I would apply for if it were going without a shadow of a doubt! I know Nottingham openly talked about how they offer paid research assistant work for psychology at their open day. That's a very good website, very helpful indeed. I think we'll need all the work we can get to survive university!

Yes, only 90p single with a young persons key card if you are in full time education  Adults pay £1.20/£1.30 but it's still cheaper! I think you will find everything up north is cheaper in terms of travel and food costs

What is the point in a lot of places making students do A Levels in Critical Thinking and General Studies! They seem like complete waste of time and effort that could be spent revising for other subjects. Lucky my college do not offer either as optional A Levels never mind compulsory  We do some rubbish qualifications too, my college's ploy to get extra funding we were told. I'm doing one in 'money management' in tutorial now and have done some on substance abuse (I can't even explain why) and employability skills.

It is isn't it! I'm rushing my EPQ at the moment, trying to find copious amounts of studies to support my proposal and ones that show no significant effects to provide a balanced argument is proving very difficult!

You have a lot of extra-curriculars, I have never worked so I'm at a bit of a disadvantage! However, I plan to attempt to get a job over summer to help my level of employability. Students who go to Durham University will get a shock when they can't find a job as there are always next to none (I have looked).

That's an interesting work placement, probably the first I've heard to do with consumer psychology  It's fascinating, I have often went into Waterstones and been tempted to buy books on that area as it's intriguing! I did work experience over summer last year with The Stroke Association. I loved it, despite it being quite upsetting at times but very interesting learning about the emotional changes, communication and cognitive problems caused by a stroke. I worked with a psychologist in a variety of environments - hospital wards, home visits, group meetings etc

Oh god I know it's ridiculous! Yeah word has it that our college use it to gain extra funding (despite their claims that it's to make us more rounded and appealing students).

Same, my EPQ deadline is tomorrow so it will soon be over with! I must say I have quite enjoyed learning about my chosen topic (eating disorders), I couldn't have coped if it was a god awful subject chosen for you.

Ah see I neeeeeed a job when I get to uni, will not be able to survive haha, I'm too awful with budgeting!! My plan was (if I actually get accepted at Durham which is becoming unlikely) to look for jobs in Durham but if there were none, to look at Sunderland or Newcastle. Also, I heard that there is a job fair at most universities within the first couple of weeks. Plus, there are jobs going at the university with student bars and things which could be considered (although they are far and few between)

Yeah it really was an interesting week! I'm also keen on graphic design and I got to work with some of the graphic designers which was a bonus. Oh wow, your work experience sounds amazing! That kind of work experience is something I will be looking into when I go to university, maybe in the second year and summer breaks (my end game is to go into clinical psychology)

In terms of jobs I get the impression that college bars tend to recruit quite a few people actually so it's not too difficult to get hired (not that I've ever tried). Same with college shops, if your college has one...

Ah that's good news! Will definitely be applying for one of these wherever I go

Bit of a long shot, but I've seen people post Duham applied offers in the general psychology 2013 thread. You may get a response from someone if you post there: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2080655

Probably firm it, I'm still waiting for Edinburgh. ATM I'm stuck between Durham and Aston; Durham is a russell group but aston has a higher employability and a placement year. I've booked an applicant day so will wait till then
