Help! Scared about moving away!

I really want to go to Chester university but I'm so so scared about moving away!
A) I'm worried that I won't make friends
B) what happens the first day I arrive at halls? What if everyone else has already arrived and left to join freshers and I'm standing alone?
C) where will I get a part time job to earn some money?
D) what about the humongous amount of debt I'll be in?

Please help and give me some advice! Thanks guys xx

Hiya, my names Ashleigh.
I'd just like to say you're not alone! I'm in a similar position. I'm close to my family, don't want to move jobs and the thought of leaving the nest and fending for myself frightens me somewhat. This aside I'm also excited, in my experience most freshers have the same fear which are burst instantly on arrival. You will make friends, earn money and be comfortable in Chester if you want to! Don't worry about money now either hun, you wont be the first with a student loan and you wont be the last! What is student finance for after all? Are you starting in September at Chester then, and if so what are you looking at studying.
You may not feel ready now, but you will be. xx

Don't worry! Theres so many opportunities to make friends in the first week! Even if you are later getting into accomodation than everyone else (I was) chances are the people on your corridor won't fully know know each other anyway and will be eager to make friends with anyone who moves in! You'll have a hall warden and chances are your first day will just be the introductory meeting so everyone will be unpacking and just socialising in the coridors, they probably won't be elsewhere and then it'll be a big comuncal walk down to the meetings. And even if you are a few days late everyone will be eager to talk anyway!

You'll also make friends through introductutory lectures and events organised by your department and I think the best way to make friends is by signing up to societys and going on their introductory nights out and taster sessions. There are so many ways you can meet people it'll be very hard not to make any friends at all!

Part time jobs wise I know the university has a job bank that you can sign up to, otherwise I would get looking early but Chester is a massive tourist city so they're plenty of hotel jobs, bar work, shop work and theres also a few call centres etc just outside the city.

Debt wise, you don't have to pay of any loans until you finish uni and balancing budgets can be quite easy if you plan ahead (e.g. Know how much you have for shopping and nights out for each week). It does help having a part time job, but otherwise summer jobs can top up your loan aswell.

Overall, i'd say dont wory. Everyone will be in the smae boat as you and the first week is really relaxed, everyone really does want to comunicate with everyone else and no-one from my experience has ever been left out!

A) To quote T'Archer, 'I'm 20 and my best friends at uni are a 29 year old and a 42 year old.' Making friends is something pretty much everyone is worried about. I'm 29 and somewhat of a loaner, and I made friends with only a few minor difficulties (personal confidence issues). There will be a load of people on your course. There's something like 15000 students, 100 or so societies, an event every night of Fresher's week, and 4 major nights out a week. Even if you don't like going out, you will definitely find people who will embrace your awesomeness.
B) You find your room-there will be loads of people helping you find your way-I think they're in red shirts, or they were this year. You'll unpack your stuff and inevitably try and rush your parents out of your room and convinced both parents seprately to give you a bit of going out cash. Then there's a welcome to the uni meeting made by the dean, who will almost definitely say "The next time you see me, it'll be when you graduate." then i think there's a little bit of orientation, and general bonding with the people you live with. Mature students have an optional meeting with other mature students around 4ish or so to get to know each other. Then there's a Freshers only social event in the SU so you can all get to know each other a bit better, then between half ten and twelve, people make their way into town to Rosies who usually throw a pretty good night. It'll be one of the few times that you'll go to Rosies at the weekend (as its cheaper during the week and more student friendly). then you'll get back and crash out untill you wake up ten minutes before random bits of administration is meant to be done at the uni on the Monday. The going out bit is optional, but highly recoommended. Don't worry if its not your type of thing though, for went of a better way of putting it, you'll probably spot what can best be described as your kind of people-similar interests and so on. It will be awesome and you'll have a great time.
C) There's plenty of oppurtunities for jobs of all kinds in Cheste,r you just have to find them-multiple supermarkets, bars, cafes, shops and so on.
D) Budget sensibly, keep a spare tenner tucked away somewhere on a night out, and NEVER bring your card out with you. You will end up in more debt than you intended, but budgetting sensibly and spending wisely won't make it too bad for you.

If you weren't worried about something to do with uni, then there'd be a problem. You'll make friends. You'll find your niche. You will inevitably run out of money halfway though November, and you will have 24 hour library sessions the day before a 500 word assignment. All these things are part of the uni experience, and as worried as you might be now, you'll look back and wonder why. What you're feeling is totally normal and totally natural. I was worried about fitting in and coming back to education at 27. Spent most of the summer bricking it. I even had to ask the guys in the rock soc what shoes and trousers I could get away with wearing on a night out. You'll be fine
I am at Chester University and everybody I know has made lots of friends. Lots of people join clubs as well, sports clubs etc to make new friends as well as their course friends.

With regards to the student debt, the majority of us are in the same boat as you and the price of getting a good education is high. It's worth it in the end though I think

There are quite alot of shops and stuff like that in Chester for part time jobs. Liverpool isn't too far away either if your willing to commute for a part time job.

I am in my third year at Chester and my best advice would be too get involved with University life as you much as you can. I am sure you will be fine. Have a wonderful time at Uni
Ahh! I'm freaking out about the exact same things! It just feels like I'm going to be so far away from everything, I'm from Norfolk so Chester is a 4 hour drive away! Just feels a bit weird and scary to think that in September i will (hopefully) be living in halls, hours away from my family and friends, be meeting loads of new people and ill have to fend for myself! Sounds so stupid, but I'm hoping all the fear and anxiety type feeling will go when I get there!

Aww I help you feel better about moving soon. Just think, the train is probably quicker, so really, you are never too far away from your family. You will be fine
Yeah I hope so, i know ill be fine once i get there i think its going to just be the settling in period, but everyone probably goes through that  and anyway there's always Skype!!

I am scared aboout the same things.
I'm sure it will be hard but remember, everyone is in the same boat.

It is going to be a huge upheaval but the best time of our lives! x
I am from Northern Ireland so it won't be as easy for me to get home all the time!! If I get there and completely freak out and want to leave, can you leave half way through the year?

Technically you can quit at any time you want, though there are enough facilities in place that it really will be a final strawr solution. You're going to love it here.

The thing i am most concerned about is not getting on with house mates and things like that. Obviously I will miss my family too but the worst worry for me is what if I find the course too hard and feel that i have to do it instead of wanting to do it :/
I am studying German, theology and religious studies, they aren't particularly common subjects either so advice is hard to find :frown:
