University of Aberdeen vs Imperial College - Petroleum Geoscience

Hey everyone,

I have received offers to study both at UoA and IP college. These are the postgraduate studies in petroleum geoscience. I am wondering, which one is better organized and recognized by the industry. From what I've read both options are great, but I would be grateful for some advices.

The big thing in the favour of Aberdeen is that you are on the doorstep of all the big oil firm's major UK operations.

As ChemistBoy said, Aberdeen gives you a bit of an advantage since they have a lot, a lot, a lot of links with the oil companies who live there. It's therefore much more likely you'll get funding or internship opportunities etc.

That said, Imperial is a great Uni too and going there will not harm your prospects either.

Does anyone know if Aberdeen is accredited for Petroleum Engineering BEng and MEng?
Does the Imech recognise the degree

Thanks for your opinion guys. However, can you tell me something more about quality of teaching in these two Universities? Is there any substantial difference?

imperial pride themselves in science and engineering, some even think that esp in those fields the imperial 'brand' rank the same or slightly higher above Cambridge worldwide, and they definitely are more competitive.

in general, UoA is much less known compare to ICL, but many friends of mine spoke well of its focused approach in solving the industry problems. while from imperial, i got mix reviews.

did u do a petroleum engineering/geoscience for your undergrads? instead of doing petroleum geoscience for PG, why not look into some other majors that combine petroleum with business? or geoscience with climate science or any other mix?

im a Petroleum Eng myself, i strongly believe that PG in Pet Geosc etc is not worth it since you can gain more knowledge by experience alone or perhaps work for some multinational companies with more challenging issues (hey, that's me)

you got offer from ICL, then i guess your academic results etc are fine, try to see other options, Herriot-Watt?

cheers

Thank for the valuable opinion.

The thing is, that I wanna do the Pet Geo, this what I know for sure:smile: Heriot - Watt was an option for me, but since I already got offers from those two I see no point in applying there. It would just confuse me more:smile:

If you had such problem, what would you chose and why?

Go Imperial or Go home? hehehehe....i dunno about you my friend, but i would definitely choose ICL over UOA just for the sake of the reputation alone. so sue me hehehe

BUT

for me as international student, ICL tuition fee is crazy expensive. Good if you have scholarship or if u are from UK or EU. so....the way i see it is that you might have the same learning experience at UOA with lower tuition fee compare to ICL?

BUT

Do remember that ICL frequently invite famous speakers to talk etc and they have access to many other interesting departments as well...

good luck

Yes, as well as a number of other engineering institutions. It is there on the course details page on the Aberdeen website.

However, it's pretty clear you don't work in the oil/offshore industry in the UK. Aberdeen is the centre of the UK's oil industry, the University is widely recognised as having very good specialisms in areas related to oil/offshore activities. Therefore I don't think, in this case, it is as clear cut as you think.

I agree, and yes i have never worked in any UK oil/gas industries, thats why im using international prestige (especially in Asia) in comparing ICL vs UOA/HWatt

UOA?........erm....yea ok, its gonna be very cold though

That's my point. Even though Imperial is widely recognized as an University and has a brand, it seems like Aberdeen's course is great as well. In addition, this is where the business is located. That is why I am still wondering. When I got the offer from Imperial it was like "wow this is it". And now I have some doubts:wink:

Thanks for the advice haha Well I am an EU student, so the fees are lower for me. Anyway, I have no scholarship and London is an expensive city to live:smile: But I am not thinking about the costs, since I have some savings:wink: I am just wondering, if the quality of teaching is the same in Aberdeen as in London.

And to be honest, I don't know why, I'd rather to live in Aberdeen than in London :smile::smile:
Hi orzech,

After almost a year, I wonder, what is your choice then? Is it UoA or Imperial?
