What social class do you consider yourself to be?

Not everyone who wears them is a chav, but I've seen them on more chavs than anyone else. However, I am aware of the "rah" stereotype, those that wear Uggs.

Although they are fashionable now, I have always preferred Chelsea boots and horse-riding style boots.

Lol, are you a props person for Downton?

Of course. Physics is the best. Geology is the worst. Social sciences are the underclass. Maths is like the aristocracy. Everyone knows it's there, but no one likes to talk about it.

(I'm kidding. Kind of.)

It's no joke! You can be cursed for life by choosing organic over inorganic chem!

Actually it's just the same in Humanities, like Greek above Latin, Fine Arts above Modern Art, etc.

Libertarians always try to pretend class is a thing of the past, or a delusion of Marxism, because to admit class not only exists but presets life chances, destroys the argument that an every-person-for-themselves society is somehow 'fair', insane though that logic is from other points of view as well.

People do care a great deal about social class and hierarchy in all human societies, anthropologists have found that all cultures engage in stratifications that people are born into. It appears to be a normal part of human life to some extent, the concept behind Socialism is to try to moderate and alleviate the worst effects of it, whilst seeking to enlighten people that it isn't really necessary to have a society where a tiny group owns nearly all of the wealth.

I accept that everyone belongs to a social class, however I don't think society is "against" the working class in particular. People complain about welfare claimants only if they abuse the system as that is their tax money funding it, it's not an attack on the poor or those who need it. Increasingly I see people on the left of the political spectrum say that it is, but most people, even the centre-right agree welfare is needed, but it needs reform.

I don't think class is a barrier for those who want to achieve. I see characteristics and interests as the bigger divisions, not someone's income. Yes a larger income buys more things, but this is not an issue so long as tools for social mobility are still provided for in the state sector.

Upper class also tends to mean those with titles.

You are confusing income with the restrictions imposed on life chances by where one is born, one's parents, access to schools and many other limitations.

The working class is definitely and actively used and abused by those who have wealth, even if only casually, but also on grand scales and quite deliberately. Actually, the middle classes are as well, but in different ways.

Can you explain your second section please? I'm not being ignorant or unaware, but how are they abused "casually" or "deliberately"?

Haha, I wasn't implying that you were "chavvy" by the way. But how was I wrong that they were worn by more chavs than not?

Organic chem... *shudders* Physical Chem is obviously the best

Sed Latium linguam pulcherrimam est! Ego linguam graecae non intellego... :frown:

P.S. Knowing my luck, I'm going to get banned for posting in a foreign language now
The lack of poor/rich bashing is odd... Where are the usual oddities from either side who say the other is evil?!

I have only a general idea what all those Chems are, but I'm sure some are superior to others, just as even the Romans had a cultural cringe towards all things Greek.

Is that a general feature? This thread seems quite analytical and interesting.

Usually... I've yet to see any thread about finance or class not get derailed into something about poor people all being benefit scrounges and all rich people are selfish ***** milking the system, it's a fun trait on here
