The Student Room Group

Huff Post today - "Has The NUS Had Its Day?"

Poll

Has NUS had it's day?

This is tasty article on the Huff Post today.
What do you think? I feel it's doesn't represent most students, but then students are such a diverse group that's pretty difficult to do.

Has anyone on TSR had anything to do with 'Syndicalists'?

Any group that claims to represent students is talking *******s. The NUS is just a radical left-wing group that I want nothing to do with.

I agree. The card etc is good but it is a left wing group that campaigns for unrealisim. For example they had a march against goverment cuts when some like me think they arent cutting enough.

Postroed from TSR Mobile

EDIT:
Why so many Negative Ratings? because I support A future which isn't shackled in chains of Labour's Debt?? Because I want the government not to waste money on waste money on Interest on Debt. BECAUSE I WANT A FUTURE???

Doesn't the NUS refuse to debate with people from the likes of the BNP & so forth? Basically anyone it considers racist? Can't remember where I heard it but if it's true then it's that sort of attitude I want nothing to do with, as it does not represent my strong belief in free speech and liberty for all, no matter how distasteful I find it.

At best the attitude is hypocritical I think, at worst it's little better than Stalinism and the like...

It never had its day in the first place. This is just a bull**** group for young left wingers with "political ambitions" who are all socialist and want to erase borders across the world. For some reason the majority of students are unrealistically idealistic, wanting to heal the world etc during their time at university, only to discard these thought completely when they start living in the real world after graduation.

Ideologues the lot of them. And they've conditioned students into funding their left-wing uselessness. They should be disbanded.

I don't think I was ever a member of the NUS, since the student union at my university weren't affiliated with it.

Which is why I wasn't surprised by this:

"Tim Berkman, a Bristol University student and member of the Syndicalists, told the Huffington Post UK the NUS was "bureaucratic, and dominated by people who want to get a career in politics rather than change anything" - referring to past NUS presidents such as Jack Straw, Stephen Twigg and Labour MP Jim Murphy."

I never particularly gave a toss about any student union. Most of the people who run them are just using it as a stepping stone into real politics.
Am I member of it automatically or something? How do I leave?
I like the card...

All my opposition has already been covered above really;

They have ulterior ultra-left wing motives

It's impossible to represent the group they claim to. How can you represent Christians, Muslims and Atheists? Rich and poor?
What about the students who support tuition fee increases?

Members are wannabe career politicians

They offer benefits in order to indoctrinate young people and to trick them into funding a pressure group they know nothing about

Like most unions, the NUS is too powerful for its own good.
A lot of things that they want happen. On the few occasions that they don't get what they want they try to bully the government with (inevitably violent) direct action.

Did you actually read the article? It's about a far left students' group that hates the NUS.

What relevance is the article? I answered the question.

Only good for the discounts to be honest. Plus, I only paid £1 for the card, so I don't even feel bad about funding the loonies.

I don't think I've ever agreed with the NUS to be honest.

What students supported the tuition fee increase?! I understand the method of paying back the loan is better, but surely nobody actually wanted to have to pay more for university?

Students who can see the bigger picture beyond being a student.

So people who aren't going to university...?
Original post by Algorithm69
That has absolutely no relevance to what I said. I simply said I want nothing to do with the NUS as it's left-wing. The fact that another left-wing group hates them is neither here nor there.

The NUS is a New Labour front group, i.e. left wing in name only.

No. People who can see life beyond university, who don't want a free ride through their student life then realise where that money comes from. People who aren't fickle.
