OK. As you move south through Europe and particularly outside Europe to Asia and the Americas you will find lower tax rates, more individualism, more competition and less state interference in the individual's life.

From the Swedish people I have met they tend to be quite shy and introverted compared to people from the tropics/Mediterranean/Arabia/South Asia as a result of the conformist culture. They also tend to be quite meticuluous when it comes to business procedures (no shortcuts etc.).

But some can be slightly racist towards Finns (Suomis).

No society is perfect but I think we're advancing in the right direction in comparison to others :colondollar:

Also, who cares about Suomis they aren't even European (lol jk) :P I had many Finnish friends

Exactly, too much interbreeding effecting their looks lol.

Not really. It does give them a rather high % (compared to other places) of Down Syndrome sufferers in the population though.

Apparently the British associate us with two remarkable events that happened recently:

Well Sverige is a more egalitarian society (i.e quite difficult to be poor) given the high tax rates and the fact that the state will take care of you regardless of how unproductive you are.

But that model wouldn't necessarily work in a more populous nation which is not sitting on so many natural resources relative to its population size (e.g. the UK, China, India, the US) - all of which are far more capitalist.

I agree. Socialism works in smaller populations which are able to provide surplus income for it's smaller population via grants, thus increasing GDP per Capita. China however, is growing in terms of total GDP. They also plan to shift away from an export lead economy to an domestic economy which can provide service and consumer industries.

Also, Norsks pronounce the name of your country differently:

They say: 'Sver-ig-he'. Whilst you say: 'Svaa-ree-yeh'.

They say: 'Nor-geh'. Whilst you say: 'Noh-ree-yeh'.

'Suomis' actually call themselves 'Suomilainen'.

Yes Nordic countries are indeed less populous and rich in resources but Denmark. Consider the Danish situation where they have relatively little natural resources? Where is their wealth coming from? Isn't that basically egalitarian profit sharing?

I don't know, I'm not an economist at all ^.^ You're clearly one of those conservative people which I despise :s-smilie:
@effofex However, China contributes alot to the global economy (I mean look at the currency manipulation accusation) than sweden will in an million years. It's an highly industrialized and advance economy, but It has not matured to the point where it can have it's currency (Yen) used an the global currency like the US. Don't forget that China has over 2 Trillion dollars in it's reserves.

Every time I read this I cringe:

Sweden does not have oil and gas like Norway

Norway uses all of its oil money for a fund. And only the interest from that fund is put into the state. Norway has a 10%-20% budget surplus.

It is a myth that Scandinavian countries do so well because of resources. Fact of the matter is, their model and their organisation is just better.

Wow! Seeing that video was a complete shock.

The only thing I can think of as to why they ran across the road is because Swedes are very reserved - so being pulled up by the police (which I assume happened) made this situation occur.

I have friends from Sweden that I met from university. Fredrik, Viktor, and Phillippe. They are very reserved, quiet and know exactly what they want to say and when/how to say it. Also, their very "people" cautious; an example of this is when I was at the bus stop back in Edinburgh, my friend Fredrik did not like standing near other people and kept at a distance. I wouldn't dare to assume all Swedes represent how Fredrik is, but Viktor is quite similar.

I think for the most part Swedes seem like this because it's part of their culture, everyone is different and has unique world views on how to see things.

I don't think for a moment though that people in the UK would dislike Swedes because of their nature. Nobody is the same and we should take appreciation in that diversity.

Personally, the Swedes I know are an excellent bunch!

I went to Sweden in 2011 and it was the nicest country I have ever been too. i love scandinavia in general in fact I'm learning Norwegian now so I can go and live in that area when I'm older.

Just interested but what was it about Scandinavia that appealed to you so much that you would consider moving there when you're older?

....(Why have I got a feeling it's something to do with the women over there :colone: )

No, they have specialized Industrial cologomate like Volvo and SAAB. But Natural resource can equate to Timber, which Finland and Sweden have..
