It doesn't help with the FT/Times apparently.
Why would you want to get round the paywall? The articles they produce are ****.

The odd thing is interesting, but I was more posting my OP to express general contempt, including for their paywall, which is not exactly sophisticated by the sound of it.

How does one make the Googlebot thing work in Chrome? Anyone know?

You can either use a web developer add on or, in chrome:

Click the menu with the three bars, tools, developer tools, then settings in the bottom right corner, then overrides. Then tick User Agent and select other, then name it Googlebot.

Damn bro, a paywall? Soon we will all resort to reading The Guardian's online news, which is the best in terms of lay out anyway, i hope they don't follow.

I think it's highly possible that they will. They've been losing money hand over fist for years on it and it was only sustainable because of the large resources of the Guardian Media Group. They've now sold some of the assets that were generating the large profits that enabled them to run the website at a stonking loss. Therefore something has to give.

I am expecting it to go paywall within months. They will probably do it a bit more effectively than the Telegraph, who seem quite inept so far.

This begs the question, for you savvy computer nerds, which is better to use? Firefox or chrome. I have it on good knowledge that the rest are inferior

I've tried a few, I'm not a Sheldon-level super-geek, but for my average levels of geekdom, Chrome wins hands down. Which is a shame in a way, as I already think Google are too powerful.

Hmmmm, might have to transfer to chrome. Though Sheldon is probably the most pretentious super-geek ever. Terrible character. Terrible show.

He can be funny though! I really like the acting. I just feel the show went off a bit, it was funnier in earlier episodes.

Yeah, Chrome is just so much faster than either Firefox or Safari for many sites - compare them on very long pages on Wikipedia for example. I find it much better for the sort of rapid researching I do on the web a lot, the load time really matters to me. It also has some really neat features generally, a lot of the apps are really good.
Great thread, just had the same problem. Let's hope it remains wildly inefficient.

I think I'd give up on the news if the Guardian/Socialist Bile was the only 'broadsheet' available online.

The Daily Telegraph seem to have introduced their paywall - they are displaying a subscribe screen after 20 free article views in one month.

So far, it appears that all you need to do to get around it is to delete all the cookies that have the word 'telegraph' in them. In Chrome, these are easily accessed from the Settings / Advanced Settings / Content Settings / All Cookies and Site Data menu.

This speedily restores the site and no need to pay.

Thanks for the tip!

I won't dwell on the possible moral complications lool!
Thank you very much!

It's probably that I simply don't feel that it's worth paying for, even with 20 free articles. It's just not that good, there's only the odd thing worth reading on it. Of course, others may disagree.

I understand what you mean-I'd probably say the same about the guardian if they had a paywall too lol

I just think it could be likened to dodging say a bus fare to go say 2 stops lool!
