Two-step reaction mechanism

The following question in my OCR textbook makes little sense:

Question:
Given the overall equation 2NO + O2 ---> 2NO2
and the rate equation Rate=k[NO]2

Suggest a possible two-step mechanism.

Answer:

1: 2NO ---> N2O2
2: N2O2 + O2 ---> NO2

I could not work out the 2-step mechanism and I think the book has made a typo in the answer. Can anyone else tell me what the correct answer might be?

- for those with the Heinemann OCR textbook the question is on page 125

actually could the answer be

1: 2NO ---> N2O2
2: N2O2 + O2 ---> 2NO2

Yeah I think my second post is right.
I think it was just one of those questions that when I came back to it later the answer just came to me :s
