Living cost at London? (for a student)

Hi all,

I'm planning on starting a MA at University of Westminster next September and, since I live outside the UK, I'm wondering how much money I will need monthly living in London? Considering the room I will be staying in may cost between £121 to £130 a week (which would be between £484 to £520 a month), do you think an estimate of £900 monthly for living costs will be enough? (This would take into account food, dressing, transportation, etc., besides accommodation).

I've heard that it is suggested that £12,000 a year is a recommended guideline for how much money you'll need to survive on your own as an MA student in London. But of course, if you're very adept at budgeting and you don't live beyond your means, then I guess an estimate of £900 a month may serve you well.

I think £12,000 a year is a bit excessive for a student.

I spend about £70 a week on everything apart from rent. That includes a lot of nice food, alcohol, socialising etc so I live pretty well.

Even assuming that you'll be in London all year round and your rent is £130 a week you should only need about £10,000 a year. Your budget of £900 a month should be more than enough.

Just an FYI: you need to check you figures, £121 a week isn't £484 a month as there aren't exactly 4 weeks in a month. To calculate correctly £121x52/12=£524.33 per month. £130 a week works out at £563.33 a month.

Yes, I know. I just rounded it down to 4 weeks for practical purposes. Thanks for the clarification, though.
