Freshers week 2013

Was wondering if anyone knows the dates of freshers week 2013 at Newcastle university?

I need to book flights asap as I need to travel from the Channel Islands

Hi everyone. I am not from England so I'm not aware how Freshers Week works. I'll be staying in university accommodation... I just want to ask your opinion, specially if you've been through it as a new student... I don't know absolutely anyone there, do you think it will be easy to meet new people during Freshers week? Do we get some kind of "support" in order not to feel so lost? I'm quite nervous about starting uni, so if you can share you experiences, I would appreciate. Thank you so much guys

Don't worry, everyone seems to feel the same way when they go to uni. Freshers week is basically just a week of activities and clubbing. It's to socialise and meet new people.

When you arrive at university, or rather, before you arrive, you will be informed about everything going on. During freshers week you also get induction lectures for your course.

If you get your freshers' wristband (which I would recommend) there will be daytime and night time activities in which you can participate. In the evenings it is either clubbing, or one of the "alternative events" which are held every night in case clubbing isn't for you. Everyone is in the same position, so even if you can't get your flatmates to join you for an event - just go on your own.

And the School you will belong to will usually assign you a Mentor (just an older student) just so that you have someone to talk to. I know a couple of schools do this, but I'm not sure if they all do.

Oh thank you so much for your help... It's just that as an international student I'm afraid that it won't be that easy to meet new people.. And the first people I'll meet will be the ones sharing the flat with me... what if they don't want to go to fresher's week? I can't imagine myself going all alone to the club or whatever.... But I guess that's something I'll have to find out in September...

And I loved the Mentor idea, I hear they send us an email before uni starts, is it true?

Usually in Halls what happens is that people have flat parties before going clubbing, so you wouldn't really be alone. There is also a society for international students, and lots of societies do like a little meet and greet during Fresher's week, as well as a societies fair. So there is ample opportunity to make friends.

And yes, your mentor would send you an email between the time you've been accepted and when university starts. Around August/September.

Oh cool, are you fluent in Spanish? I haven't spoken to anyone in spanish here in a long time.

Hmm, we speak Portuguese in Portugal... I know the basics of Spanish but I'm far from being fluent :b

Well, I know that, but I was just wondering since the few times I've been to Portugal I've been able to communicate with most people in Spanish. I guess it would very much depend on the region.
