ocr biology f212 enzyme question?

hi, im just revising enzyme inhibition and was slightly confused by why a competitive inhibitor doesn't get catalysed by the enzyme once its blocking the active site?

thanks in advance !

I think because the right bonds cannot be made by the inhibitor to start the reaction

The competitive inhibitor blocks the active site, hence the substrate can no longer bind to the active site of the enzyme, no enzyme-substrate complex forms and therefore the enzyme doesn't catalyse the reaction.

Even though the inhibitor fits into the active site, it is not 'complementary' to it, so as Scotty Bear said, bonds cannot be made between the molecule and enzyme for it to be catalysed. It's like any key can be put into any hole, but only one is complementary and will fit properly to open the door.
