I've heard about the struggles of farm work in London from others on this thread. Sorry I am unable to help in giving you any contacts (Scotland) 
Oo nice choices, I would be too worried to apply to Cambridge incase I didn't make the cut (which I doubt I would) haha plus I've heard it is heavily theory oriented and has little practical elements in comparison which I would enjoy too much but I think ill say try the RVC 
Yep not easy! RVC is my 1st choice but doubt I will have to choose and that's if I get any offers. Just got to try our best and hope

I am really struggling with farm experience though so if any of you can help me out with any contacts around London, mainly Essex way that would be really appreciated. There are a number of City Farms around London. They are much smaller than the commercial counterparts (some of them will have a few cows and a few pigs and etc), but they tend to have a wider variety of animals. They are obviously not the ideal solution as their management is very different from farms with thousands of pigs or dairy cattle, but hopefully you will get a good taste of handling a sheep or a cow! Back from the farm. One of the cows still has mastitis and watching the farmer squeeze out all the pus, blood and curdled milk was ermmm lovely . Sadly the farmer thinks that that quarter of her udder will never produce milk again, but the remainder of her udder seems fine.

Guys, you will never believe this but after calling around 50 large animal vet practises, I have finally got a large animal vet placement! The best part is, that's its for two weeks and only 40 minutes away from me (and I live in London) which is actually amazing. I think I squealed a little too much to the lady on the phone, she must think I'm crazy now. Oh well

Okay, ridiculous question here that will probably reveal me as the idiot that I am ... what is a handful of animal feed called? A farmer told me today that it's an own or an awn or something like that, but I can't remember for certain and Google isn't helping.

In that case I think I can live without knowing
It doesn't help that the guy who told me has a really strong Irish accent so I think I may have misheard in the first place I'll ask tomorrow. It's not really a handful, anyway, it was two hands cupped together. I don't know if it applies to all animal feed, but we were holding a load of sheep nuts at the time.

I'm a bit late in getting involved in this thread so i'll just introduce myself.
I'm Hanna, from North Yorkshire and i've wanted to work with animals for as long as I can remember and in the past year or so I realised that vet med was what I really wanted to do. I started my work experience last year at a small animal vets and have just finished a lambing placement last week which i enjoyed so much more as it was so hands on!
I also have three horses and I think that my main interest of vet med came from the love of them and growing up on a farm environment.
I also have more work exp planned for July (my study leave is not going to be a nice rest) at a large animal vets and two kennels/catteries!
I'll try read some of the earlier posts so I can get to know a few of you!!

I'm literally just about to try a LA vets this very second (email first then a call if no response) and as it has been so hard to find one I truly hope this may work! Oo that's interesting (your background), your certainly lucky to have been brought up in that. Would you like to specialise in equine medicine or Large or not? Anyway I hope your placements

That's good, I seem to have been pretty lucky with getting a LA vets placements from looking at all the trouble people on here have seem to gone through to get them, I got mine straight away :')
Yeah I've been lucky to be brought up this way and happy that I want to make use of it with my future career. I think I'd like to specialise with farm animals or equine, small animals seem to bore me a bit, I'd much rather be outdoors in the countryside! How about you, do you want to specialise in any specific area?
All my placements I have arranged last a week each! I'm away for most of the holidays so squeezed it all into July!

Anyway, it was super busy on the farm today. I didn't get a chance to ask about the own/awn/ounce thing because a school group came in so the daily schedule was all out of kilter, but I did lots of interesting things. The cow with mastitis has improved a bit, which is good news at least.
One of the farmers gave me his copy of the Merck Veterinary Manual, and it is brilliant. He said that he has a few more books similar to it that he'll mail over from Ireland, I can't wait.

Yeah I've been really lucky to grow up around horses and have my own since I was young (my grandparents influence on me and my sister, mum wasn't too keen and still isn't!) Thank you I am trying to squeeze in as much experience as I can! You seem to have some good experience yourself too and your farm work at the moment sounds interesting from what I have read on here!
Also well done on getting your dairy placement too!
