I have to confess to visiting Swindon from time to time. It's not quite as bad as portrayed. They have a very large Sainsburys, some good cinemas and one or two nice curry houses. Also a lot of roundabouts.

The 'Oxford best for humanities, Cambridge best for sciences' thing is exaggerated. Lots and lots of very good science at Oxford. And lots and lots of very good humanities at Oxford.

have you seen their roundabout-of-roundabouts?

I used to do contract work out in Swindon.....ok place to work, people are nice enough, but otherwise very bland.

I like the countryside near here though - it's really nice along the the way towards Swindon, places like the White Horse at Uffington. Oxford totally beats Cambridge for nearby scenery, I feel sorry for them stuck in the middle of their prairie-like agridesert of utter flatness. Oh, apart from the Gog Magog 'hills', lol.

Yes it is very flat around Cambridge and the county has the fewest trees in England :frown:

but we do have the Fens !! And the largest water meadow in England !! ermm i am sure there are other nice things too

When I got a part time job up in Manchester someone randomly said to me, without me mentioning anything at all about the place 'Huh you seem like an Oxford kind of guy'.

This concerned me deeply. I liked to think of myself as a bit less transparent than that.

I think I need to let everyone know that I was joking about the chess cluelessness. The joke made some kind of sense in the context of the earlier posting that you didn't read. And they say irony is big at Oxford.

The Fens? Phtt. Horrid marshy smelly areas.

As for that trickle of a 'river' through town, what's it called, the Came? Camel? Horrid stinky thing.

The only thing I envy Cambridge for (and I mean this bit) is the cafes, so much nicer than Ox.

I'm a Cambridge person.

Just because I live here; I don't go to either uni. The only time my preference shines is when the boat race comes about, and we all know how well Cambridge did this year..

I get "ohhh, typical Oxford student" a lot if I say something that comes across to them as superior, mannered or in some way intellectual. It's meant as a put-down of course, but I try to treat it as a compliment. :wink:
