My first experience of alcohol

I am soon going to be 16 and I have just had my first experience of alcohol. My first one was a "typical" vodka. It was disgusting. It tasted of nail varnish remover (I haven't tasted a nail-varnish remover but I can guess the taste from the scent). The second one was an orange flavored one, I have no idea what it's called but it was a bit like fizzy orange juice but a lot bitter. I saw absolutely no point in drinking it and why people find that it is one of the many alcohols which "taste good".

Here is my question: why drink alcohol? I mean maybe it is a stress-reliever and it makes you feel good but I am guessing in order to achieve that you need to drink a lot of it. And to be honest I can't even get through two spoon-fulls of ANY alcohol (I have had sips of many in the past few days and I have found NONE of them appealing). Why ruin your liver when you can have other drink which taste MUCH better?

If you want a stress-reliever smoking is much better as it works effectively in just one puff.

Anyways this is just my opinion, share yours

Well firstly, you don't drink vodka straight, of course it will taste horrible (unless it's an ice cold, very high quality Russian vodka!)

Secondly, you don't actually need that much alcohol for you to feel the effects - I don't mean being drunk, but two pints of cider I find will provide me with a little social lubrication and elevated mood.

Smoking is worse for you if you drink sensibly, and is also far more addictive - if it worked effectively in just one puff then there wouldn't be so many people smoking 40 a day or more!

If you don't want to drink, then by all means don't, but there are lots of reasons that people do - you probably just aren't aware of them at 15.

I did have vodka mixed with juice and it still tasted horrible. One puff can make a person feel so good and it actually depends on how depressed they are, 40 or more can easily transform a person into a completely happy one and truly most people would die for that.
Lots of ways to mask the taste. Try a sweet energy drink with a nice (not cheap) spirit.

Or try a sweet strawberry cider or perry.

Or learn to love apple cider/beer/wine

I didn't like the taste of beer before, but you develop a taste for it and I get cravings of an ice cold beer sometimes. When you are drinking in a sociable environment as well, you forget about the taste and just drink almost ritually.

I never want to smoke though, it just looks and smells filthy and is too expensive to be worth it. Alcohol makes you feel great, alive, funny, happy (most people anyway), and is a great thing to do at parties as it gets everyone laughing and enjoying themselves. I'm talking about responsible drinking here - it's not going to do much damage to your health at all is you are sensible about it and know your limits.

Without sounding patronising you are still young and you don't need to be drinking properly yet. Give it a few years and you'll understand.

Sure, it's great for a time (and who really gives a cr@p about the taste anyway - it's not terrible, like JD was outrageous for a second, but then I was a man!), but it does get boring after a while.

Ugh, Bulmers red berries and lime tasted even worse than normal bulmers - personally, I just drink straight cider. All of this "Oh, it taste blah blah" is just childish, if one is wanting to drink. Just put up with it!

The "taste" argument is an old one. Smoking's even worse for you than moderate alcohol drinking is. Sure, both are poisons, but tobacco is worse and is more addictive.

Just put up with the taste (that is, if you are going to drink)! I've learnt to put up with just drinking straight vodka - there's nothing to it!

Lots of people drink just to get drunk. Personally, I don't see the point in that. I would suggest cocktails, which are sweeter, and in my opinion, nicer. You can get them ready mixed so don't even have to do it yourself. Mojitos are nice, as are cosmopolitans.

Because a nice chilled Cider or Perry in the summer is bliss.

But how are we supposed to get underage people to drink irresponsibly without offering tasty alco-pops?
Also, OP, just 2 or 3 pints of cider will get you buzzed and "feels good" for a while. Drinking lots more and getting drunk is *alright* but next exactly the best thing in the world unless you "want to get away from it all".

Personally, having drunk lots before and gotten drunk, it's fairly overrated now. I can see the appeal for those who "want to get away from it all" however - but personally, I don't have much to "get away from". Sure, it's good as a social lubricant, but personally, I'm well motivated enough and relaxed enough to socialise without it. But I don't mind having the odd drinks here and there if circumstances call for it - but I'd never really go out of my way to drink - it just makes you less aware and dims your frontal lobe (i.e. I wouldn't have drinks whilst watching or movie or something).
Your tastes do change. There are so many subtle types of alcohol - amaretto, for example, tastes like Marzipan. I also recommend Malibu and coke. Irish whisky is another slightly sweeter drink - I think younger people tend to like sugar more.

Personally, I like the taste and I like the social aspect. Experiment a bit once you are older. You won't ruin your liver with the occasional drink.

When I first started drinking, I basically went the "get the worst of it over and done with" approach. In other words, I went straight for the vodka bottle and JD and didn't bother trying to mask the taste. Just that first smell of JD made me want to hurl at first - now, it doesn't.

So you'd rather give your self mouth/lung cancer and heart disease, than drink every once in a while and have fun which causes a bit of liver damage?

People drink for what it does to them, not the taste of it. It all tastes foul in my opinion. Personally I don't like the effect it has on me, so I don't drink. Not to mention the price, jeez!

Tbh when I first tried drinks like wine, cider, and some spirits I hated the taste, but it grows on you. It took me a good few years to like the taste of wine, I thought I would never like it, but one day I tried an amazing rose wine and that was it.

I don't see how smoking is better though, at least alcohol can taste nice, I can't see how cigarettes can taste nice and the smell sticks to your clothes, hair etc. :s-smilie:

Anyway, everyone has different tastes, but considering how popular alcohol is in the world, it can't be that bad to a lot of people

As with anything, tolerance increases - if you become a seasoned smoker then one puff certainly will not do that (you'll stop getting a nicotine rush and just need the nicotine because your body is addicted). Most of the smokers I know want to quit.

Also, a nicotine rush is a very temporary feeling compared to alcohol.

I totally support freedom of choice and you can smoke if you wish, just don't be misled by thinking that it's healthier than moderate drinking and you'll always get that rush straight away - it isn't and you won't.
You're looking at it the wrong way. You should be drinking for the social effects, not the taste.

imo it all tastes terrible.

I object to JD exisiting.

If people want to drink whiskey drink a proper one not that JD piss.

Most people drink alcohol to get drunk :dontknow:
Personally, I drink when I go out to let loose a bit, relax and dance etc. It makes me more confidant and chatty which is fun. Try vodka and coke instead of juice, it tastes better. It'll probably take you a little while to find the drinks you like the taste of - don't assume all alcohol is rubbish because your first experience wasn't great! And to be fair, you're only 16. You will probably appreciate it more when you're older and can go out into town etc.

I don't only drink to get drunk (and when I say drunk, I don't mean drink-til-I-throw-up drunk. :yucky:I mean just a few drinks) - sometimes it's nice to curl up with a glass of wine and some chocolate, watch a film with a friend. Socially it's a nice thing to do, every now and again.

An occasional drink won't ruin your liver  - smoking will do FAR more damage!

It really frustrates me when people say smoking is a "stress-reliever". It is not. The relaxed feeling smokers get when they smoke a cigarette is the result of nicotine addiction. Regular smokers need to smoke to reduce the tension (i.e. stress) caused by withdrawal symptoms they experience in between cigarettes. Smoking has been proven to make stress worse, not better. The relaxed feeling smokers get is simply the cravings for nicotine being satisfied.
