Lenton & Wortley 2013/14

Hello guys

Like other halls of residence have done, I have decided to create a thread for those who have received offers and confirmed catered accommodation at Lenton & Wortley in The University of Nottingham's very own University Park.

Also, hopefully people can offer some insight into L&W if they have visited it at an Open Day or are students that have lived in these halls. My only problem is that there is very limited updated information of what these halls have to offer and also very limited pictures of the exterior and interior on the internet.

So, comment below of what your room offer is at Lenton & Wortley and what you will be studying. Lets get some conversation going!

Little list of who has what (gathered from numerous University of Nottingham threads):

Shared Bedroom for me  I hope this thread will make meeting people easier because I haven't met very many people staying at Lenton & Wortley. I'll be studying biochemistry and molecular medicine by the way

Great subjects! Are you both going to be very far away from your subject buildings at L&W?

Jack, what made you opt for a shared bedroom? Lets hope you get a good room mate! Also, I haven't met many others with offers from L&W either but I hope this thread can bring people together and at least by the time we go we will probably know someone or we can all meet

Also, if you haven't guessed by my username, I'm Emily and I will be studying Psychology. I have an offer of a private shared bathroom at L&W from a second random allocation. L&W is a wild card for me as I haven't visited it at open days but from what I have gathered it seems great and apparently (from reading old threads) the Warden is a really nice chap
I don't think it's too far away from Maths. Not too fussed, Nottingham has a really awesome campus.

I haven't seen Lenton and Wortley either. Looks pretty great on the pictures I've seen, which isn't really many.

Looking forward to it!

I just had a look of this map of University Park and if it's correct then you will be taking the same route as me as the Maths building is close to the Psychology building

Me too! I have heard they have really good fresher parties throughout the year

Thanks! Yeah it seems we will.

And yeah, fresher parties are going to be great! It's like little communities haha.

Biochemistry is mostly taught in the medical school so it is relatively close I'm just upset that it is a bit of a walk from the gym :frown: I went for the shared bedroom cause it was the cheapest and my maintenance grant pays for most of it  and also I see it as sharing with my future best friend

I was also hoping to get some sort of gathering going before we all start

I noticed it was quite close to the medical school  Aww, that's a nice way to look at it, very positive! The shared room is so cheap compared to en suites, I don't think en-suites are really worth the money they are asking. I'll be single study but sharing a bathroom with one other person, I wonder who that lucky person will be - hoping they will be tidy!

Well I plan to keep popping on to TSR before we go so I don't lose touch with the relevant threads to meet people. I keep seeing Facebook links for people to join who have firmed Nottingham. It's a nightmare as I am not signed up to any social networking sites so I can't join. I find them too distracting when I should be revising for exams. I will probably join one after exams finish

Your not missing much on the facebook links yet anyway, either people who have joined are very shy and are not speaking very much or are like you hoping to avoid distractions from revision. I'm on a gap year so I'm constantly waiting for something to happen on there  I would say that it is worth getting facebook once exams are over so you can get a head start on socialising

Awesome  I'm hoping to go for graduate entry medicine myself and will be doing my undergraduate in biochemistry. Are you moving from far?
I was in L&W back in 2010/11, hopefully it hasn't changed much since then because it was a freaking awesome place to live when I was there. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Generally speaking, it doesn't matter what hall you are in; you'll love wherever you get put and make friends regardless, but I liked the vibe in Lenton. A couple of good points-

The bar is a Mix, as opposed to a standard bar. This is very good news, as the food they serve is far superior to what you can get from the dinner hall at lunchtime. You can use your meal card anywhere on campus for lunch, but if you're home at lunchtime it's nice to get something tasty.

Common room is pretty standard, but bloody big and separate from the rooms so you can make a bit more noise in there. I have no idea what state the pool or air hockey tables are currently in, but they are free and do get periodically fixed when pissed freshers inevitably **** them up.

All of the staff are lovely. Medics! Be nice to Maria the Kitchen manager and she will make you packed lunches on days when you have GP or hospital placements. I have no idea if Glenn McDowell is still the warden; hopefully he is so that you too can enjoy wine and cheese in his mansion.

What are the ensuite rooms like?
What block are they all in? Thanks

Haven't the foggiest- I've never been in one. As for where they are, AFAIK all of them are in Wortley House, which is the newest block in the hall.

Thanks for your insight! I'd appreciate it if you kept around for when more of those who get allocated join the thread and have questions, if you wouldn't mind of course as your insight would be valuable  How are the rooms for sizing and furniture btw? It's annoying as there's not really many photos of the interior and exterior compared to other halls and if there is some unfortunately they are poor quality images so we can't see them all that well :frown:

Unless you have a large study room in Lenton Hurst all of the rooms are pretty much exactly the same size. There's a desk, a mini fridge, bed, wardrobe, 2 chairs and a sink. Here's a picture that I took during freshers week; I'm standing in the doorway and the sink is immediately to my left.

All rooms in all halls look a little bleak when you first walk in to bare walls, so I'd recommend bringing at least 4 posters and the most colourful bedclothes you can find. It becomes homely soon enough.Photo 20-09-2010 17 06 34.jpg

Ahh biochemistry will be awesome! Not sure I could cope with doing two degrees, Nottingham was my only offer so I feel really lucky  I live in Suffolk, so a couple of hours away...how about you?

So that room is a large study? Looks pretty good! So how would I find out when I arrive what room I would be allocated and where? I find it weird it's two different halls merged into one. Scared I won't be able to find my room. I planned on bringing some Psychology related posters :P Is the train station far from the university?
