Why I think Cristiano Ronaldo is the most overrated player in recent times.

Hmm. I'm not sure I agree with the bolded part. I agree with the general premise of what you say, but it cannot be denied that being able to pass like Iniesta or Zidane makes someone a better footballer than, say, Ramires. Similarly, one could argue that the fundamental part of goalscoring - shooting - is a rudimentary skill, too. This may sounds like caviling, and probably is, but it was just something that occurred to me.

When I said rudimentary, I meant it's the basic necessities that lead up to a goal (basically implying to the OP that they are like the components of a goal, everyone's effort in bringing the ball up to the goal scorer is the source of the goal). I did not mean to sound like I was disrespecting the passing and dribbling abilities of the players you've mentioned, you would have to be a moron to not acknowledge what they do with the ball is spectacular.

Saying he is overrated is asinine.

If anything, he is worth the hype.
Football ( soccer ) itself is overrated,...
zidane wasnt an artist player, the beautiful thing about him was his efficieny on the pitch, no faffing around like ronaldinho

thats why messi is better then him, he is much more efficient , more accurate as well

And obviously ronaldo is like micheal jordan, his headers are mesmerising

Im not an Arsenal fan (in fact I support Chelsea) but in my opinion a prime Thierry Henry was better than Ronaldo simply as a pure footballer. He was faster, better technically, a better finisher, better passer and dribbler. I would only say Ronaldo beats Henry in terms of his strength and Aerial ability.

Secondly he is able to score 50 goals because he is playing in a squad that base their play around him and in a league where his team are far ahead of others both financially and quality wise with the exception of Barcelona. There arent many leagues in the world where you see a team lose the title despite having 91 points and score near enough to 100 goals is there. You could argue that Atletico Madrid are doing providing some form of competition and you would be right but to me that is due to Reals complacency.

My second point was more to do with Ronaldos overall contribution in a game, he is not like Henry in the sense that he can not make those very long sprints that can drive a team forward. I referred to him as a big game player as he scores goals in big games, you dont necessarily have to take a game by the scruff of its neck to do that. You mention 2008 , but even then I wasnt that impressed with his overall performances, Paul Scholes was my favourite player in that particular United team if im honest. No one ever takes to much notice of the players who can conduct a game and control the tempo.

Finally you cant compare Xavi and Iniesta to Cafu and Ronaldinho as they are of course very much different players. To say they are they are the best midfield pairing is debatable and in terms of their position I believe Zidane surpasses Iniesta and their are a quite a few better than Xavi. Ronaldinho was more an example than anything else as I didnt actually rate him that highly either. I could also mention the likes of Cannavaro, Thuram and Rivaldo but then Id end up digressing.

Being a chelsea fan, I'll say this time and time again. I've never been more scared of a player playing against us than ronaldinho, not even messi has scared me like that.

But anyway his stats speak for himself wrt ronaldo. zidane surpasses iniesta but give iniesta a few years then maybe he could surpass him.

Ronaldo scores 60 goals a season, an incredible athlete and ronaldo has that advantage to his game and uses it. Technically he may not be as good as henry but why does that matter if he's getting goals. Also ronaldo has a crap conversion rate because of the number of long shots he takes. Similar situation to lampard a couple years ago but he's still a great finisher.

One thing that's completely overrated about ronaldo is his free kicks. Despite the banger he scored 15 mins ago.

To be honest I take back what I said, I just miss the good ole days. Ronaldo is definitely not underrated I was just debating for the sake of debating.

Ronaldinho used to rip us apart all game. Messi can't even score penalties against us :colonhash: We're lionel messi's bogey team, pep guardiola's too from our head to heads

It's like west ham and hercules on football manager.

Although messis effectiveness is way more than ronaldinho's. Ronaldinho could do way more, could score fluke free kicks and flukey toe pokes from 25 yards. Yes they are references to england and chelsea matches.

I remember that free kick against seaman when i was like 7 or 8 and he scored and England went out. Was so upset because at that time Michael Owen was my favourite player :ninja:

The flukey free kick reminds me of something? Why is international football so **** nowadays? 98 and 2002 were great world cups, 06 wasn't too bad but nowhere near as bad as 2010. Euros was way better than the world cup though.

Biggest fluke ever he miskicked the ball. Even more of a fluke than rooney's goal vs city. Not as bad as cisse's though. Contender for best goal ever.

I dunno maybe cause back then there were lots of stars who were spread around nations where as now it seems its all Spain? Spains constant winning though has made it slightly dull although being part Spanish can't complain really

Ronnie got sent off that game as well didn't he? Man was so pissed off with Seaman as well.

But even 2010 was dull all round when spain first won it. The only exciting games were ghana as they were underdogs plus my family are from ghana. Ghana vs uruguay was the best game in that tournament thats for sure. The rest were just ****. Germany being raided for 90 mins after destroying every other team. England having 'a much better team' than germany which was obviously shown as nonsense.

I even forgot what happened that game but I wanted brazil to win because they had ronaldo and everyone in my primary school class pissed off at me for being 'unpatriotic' funny enough his last game ever involved him being lobbed like a bitch.

Guys, this is probably the most ball**** thread ever!

Only on TSR, would we see this...
Wait, why the hell are people talking about Michael Owen scoring in the 2001 FA Cup final.

It would be cooler to stay on topic!

The fact that he's in a poll on that other thread and ahead of the likes of Maradona, regarded by most as the GOAT, whilst the likes of Di Stefano, Beckenbauer, Cruyff don't even make the poll shows that he certainly is overrated by some.

Strength, speed, finesse and composure. An all round player, and when you say he does not have a lot of assists, the fact of the matter is he has the quality to take on the chance himself and score.

Scruff of the neck? Who turned up in the CL final against Chelsea...Ronaldo. Who scored a double against Bayern last year? Who's permanently on the score sheet for Real? He's a man for the big games.

Ronaldo is a perfect specimen of a footballer: double footed, skilful, long shot specialist, clinical finisher, aerial threat, pacey. I don't think he's over rated one bit.

I still think Messi is better though. Messi is just magic.

Couldn't agree more.

Ronaldo is incredible, but Messi is better. Most Madrid players seemed to take their foot off the gas in La Liga this season, but Ronaldo is a class act, yet again.
