How much of an impact does accommodation at UWE influence your student experience?

Right, here we go...

I think the title to this post is quite self-explanatory but just to make sure I will explain what I mean. I have read a considerable number of threads in regards to accommodation and the best place to live; pre-dominantly the debate has been between Student Village, Marketgate & Carroll Court with the occasional mention of Phoenix Court.

It seems to be apparent from what I have read that many people consider living at the Student Village or Carroll Court as ideal if your course is on the Frenchay campus as it means that your lectures are extremely close to where you are living along with other facilities such as the library. This is important for me as I intend on studying Business & Law and having easy access to the Law library may prove to be beneficial. I have also heard that the campus becomes boring on the weekends and you can feel isolated.

However Marketgate seems to be where it all goes down in terms of nightlife, being situated right in the hub of the city centre which means that people can go out day/night whenever they please where as students living on Frenchay find it a bit of a struggle in terms of distance and expense; also, it seems to be the general opinion not to rely on the buses as they are never on schedule. This works the other way as well in terms of getting to lectures on time.

I have just firmed UWE and I am currently a 17 year old, coming from London which is a completely different city and arguably, culture than Bristol so I think it is understandable that it feels rather daunting at the moment.. Do you think that this should play a part in where I should apply?

Student finance is a bit of an issue as well, my loan will cover the cost for all the accommodation, but it will leave things very VERY tight in terms of how much I have to spend for food, drink, going out, cabs, subject books etc.

At the end of the day I know we are going to university to study a course that interests us, but I also want the "student experience" of going out and having a good social life which is why this accommodation issue is leaving me with such a headache

Pleasee, any recommendations or advice from anybody will be much appreciated.

Thank you

P.S. Sorry if sections of this post do not make sense, I am extremely tired at the moment and should really be asleep lol :tongue:

I found Student Village to be painfully isolated.. even though there are '000s of you there, its design and layout mean it doesnt lend too well to mass socialising, and the on campus SU facilities really arent that great... Its also SO damn expensive, you cant have a car there and unless you online shop, its a trek to sainsburys...

Also, dont even bother having a party in the Student Village accom, security will be up to close it down before you've got onto the second track on your iPod...

Marketgate is more sociable, but milessss from Frenchay, and can get pretty loud/grim at times from what friends thought. Also, not much in the way of food shops nearby, and the security is worse.

This is kind of what I didn't want to hear lool  but thanks for being honest. Would you say not to live in the student village then?

What is the general vibe of the university as a whole? Is it a good environment/ friendly/ buzzing? Or do most people just keep themselves to themselves?

And also if you don't mind me asking how have you found living in Bristol as a whole i.e. is there a lot of activities/restaurants during the days or a good selection of bars and clubs for nightlife?

Thanks again

Its up to you, if you want to have a big nightlife experience, the city accommodation is better, but commuting into campus and back is a ball ache and can take an hour each way during rush hour... depends what course you are doing.

The uni is also banning ALL students, beginning in September, from commuting to uni in a car (in any academic year), if you live basically anywhere near Bristol itself. They are trying to promote sustainable transport, based on their buses, but the buses are awful, and the city is too congested for that to work, also the buses don't run in a lot of areas that they need to to serve everyone. It is an out of city campus trying to act like an inner city campus and it will struggle to work IMO.

From other uni's ive visited, and friends who've visited me, the general consensus is that it is a pretty quiet and dull uni, although the facilities are decent. I personally think i would have done better going to Trent.

Bristol is a beautiful city, possibly one of the best in the UK, esp. the city center, but, Frenchay is out on the North edge, away from any real hub, or 'life' its surrounded by estates, motorways and industry.

The nightlife is nice too, but not as big as i thought it would be, although there are many gems if you know where to look!!

Its up to you... but bear in mind Frenchay is isolated and the student village is expensive.

To be fair, the cars and driving situation does not particularly effect me right now because currently I do not even have a provisional license let alone have a car atm lol  but why do you think the uni is dull?
Fair enough, will be a problem for many people...

It just lacks a vibe/identity sort of thing.

Hi, I'm also stuck at choosing which accommodation to apply for. I've accepted my offer from UWE to do Fine Art a couple of weeks ago now but i'm still having difficulties at choosing accommodations. i'm going to be based at the Bower Ashton campus but more so Spike Island which from what i've read about, Marketgate would be the better choice for me according to my course. However, as you've mentioned above, it is more sociable, can get "loud/grim" and a friend of mine also mentioned that they get away with lots of parties and there's a lot of drug taking (which i might find an issue, but then i kind of expected that being uni and all). Is Marketgate as wild as it seems? I'd like to be able to get to my lectures and studio fairly easily (20-30 mins max), close to places employing part-timers, be able to meet new friends, enjoy the night scene now and again (but i'm not really that crazy about going out to clubs, i'm more of a pubs and bars kinda girl) and i'd like to be able to have some  serenity at sorta decent hours to get some sleep and to also get some work done from the comfort of my own room if i'm feeling a little lazy for the library and studios, and preferably an en-suite. I know that all sounds very particular ahahaha but thank you, i'd appreciate any help! Oh and does anyone possibly know if Marketgate comes with the gym membership?

I can't wait to meet people and rent with new friends next year!! 😝

Personally, I disagree with this. I think you benefit more from living on campus, it gives you a chance to meet so many people and to meet people on your course. The SU is great for meeting people, plus it's cheap drinks too. However, I agree with the trek to Sainsburys, it's only 15 minute walk but when you have bags and stuff it's annoying. Shopping online would probably save you money though, as I go to Sainsburys for loaf of bread and milk and I come back with a years worth of Ben and Jerrys because it was half price.

As for parties, my flat have a flat party every Tuesday without fail. We had one last week with 30+ people. Security came up and we just all hid in my room because they're not allowed into your rooms. So far I've only had 1 noise complaint. Yeah they can come up to your flat and knock on, but what else can they do? Ask for your name and you say no and walk off.

I thought Marketgate was waaaaay more relaxed in terms of security, or so I've heard.

Yeah to be fair we are pretty much in the same predicament  but I will be based at Frenchay for my course. I think that it would be more practical for me to get campus accommodation in the form of SV or Carroll Court; but the only thing is that they are sooo pricey , especially the Student Village. However, I do not want to be isolated from Bristol's nightlife as it is meant to be reasonably good which is the plus aspect of Marketgate, which is still really expensive.

Oh yeah and I read on a sheet I picked up from the March open day to look at the gym memberships as well as I am interested in this also and found that a gym membership at UWE is not included in the accommodation price for Marketgate fyi

These are all good points especially concerning grocery shopping and the Student Union in all fairness, but the SU just doesn't appear very lively; more of a place to chillax  haha.

Haha you seem like quite the rebel  when it comes to throwing parties in the SV.

Would you recommend living at The Student Village 1st year then Jodianne?

Thank you for the very helpful response btw

In regards to the SU, there almost something to do in there every night, theres quiz nights, 2-4-1 cocktails, 1.50 friday and the lock in. The lock in is by far the most popular night, usually every Tuesday but I've heard they're moving it back to Monday. Either way, it's £1.20 drinks and there's a good atmosphere in there. It's become way more lively since they've closed Bunker on Tuesdays, because that's where everyone use to go, but now everyone goes SU instead because it's cheap and no need to pay for a taxi you can just crawl home. Plus in the day time they do really cheap food.

I would highly recommend living in the Student Village, however the only downside is the price. It's very expensive, but it's the same price in Marketgate.

Also, the Student Village isn't as strict as everyone makes out.

I've applied for the Carroll Court accommodation, this is the cheaper option and would leave me plenty of money spare from my student loan  My friend who I work with graduated in 2011/12 at UWE and did say to stay on Frenchay Campus. She said the welcome week and freshers week around the campus are very fun and you meet hundres of new people. She said she made friends for life and stayed in accommodation with them in years 2 and 3 so it all seemed positive. I think it depends what you want out of Uni life, the price and location sound like Frenchay is a good option! People did say on the open day that you're a bit out the way if you're off campus but it depends what course you do I guess... I'm doing the LLB so obviously Frenchay is best  but I've heard nothing but positives about it, so up to you what you, it's down to what you think would make you happier. Either way you get a free bus pass so not a problem getting to town etc if you wanted to.

Yeah that sounds good. Carroll Court does seem like the better financial option  also that is rather positive to hear about your friend as I have heard that it cann get boring sometimes when you cannot get into town. And I will be studying Law as well (well Business & Law) so I might see you in September haha

Is that a good loud i.e. lively or bad loud (annoying/ distracting)?

I've literally just joined TSR as it has only just occurred to me that it might be a good idea to get to know some people before I join UWE in September. I quite literally feel the EXACT same way as you do regarding preferred accommodation, although I didn't really think about it and just went for Marketgate as my first choice... May have been a bad move in hindsight, but I'm sure I'll cope... Hopefully ! I'm also doing Fine Art and I also prefer bars and pubs to clubs by a very long way!! Have you decided where your staying now?
Hi there, im also coming from london (the cultural differences arnt really that different especially if you live in the city centre) and my history course will be at st matthias. What ive planned to do is to stay at marketgate for the student life and nightlife, seeing as its right in the city, and from market gate i will be biking it to st matthias as there is a pathway right from marketgate to st matthias. hope this helped
