York/Exeter

So i have narrowed my uni choices down to York and Exeter, i have an AAB offer from York and an AAA offer from Exeter to study philosophy and after visiting both universities am still struggling to make up my mind. Would be very greatful if anyone with experience of either universities could let me know whether they're enjoying it and what its like, particularly if anyone is doing philosophy and could tell me a bit about the department in terms of size etc.
Also if anyone has an opinion on whether one is better than the other in terms of employability or whether they are pretty much the same
thanks
I say York
York all the time ^_^

York is over all a better university.
Its research quality is ranked 8th by RAE.

Exeter is the overall better University. Is placed higher in the rankings than York as a University. Though there is not a big difference. Both are excellent Universities.
For specifically Philosophy I would recommend York over Exeter.

The Exeter Philosophy 'department' is actually a subset of the department of Scoiology, Philosophy, and Anthropology. I think the work they do there is rather good but an awful lot of it is concentrated in the niche-field that is the philosophy of biology. For specifically that, Exeter (perhaps along with Bristol) is the best in the country and is even world-leading.

But if you compare the faculty lists you'll see at once that the York department of Philosophy has about 3 times as many staff as there are Philosophers in the Exeter department of this that and the other. The York faculty as well have a broader range of specialisations and these in the more standard fields of philosophy.

Also worth considering is the difference in the kinds of choices available to you. Module options in Philosophy at Exeter include:

PHL1014 Identity and Difference
PHL1036 Foucault-Discipline and Punish
PHL1112 Philosophy of Film
PHL2050 Knowing the Social World
PHL3013 Virtues and Vices
PHL3018 Sex and Death: Introduction to the Philosophy of Biology T
PHL3029 Sociology and Philosophy of Globalisation
PHL3046A The Holocaust, Genocide and Society
PHL3074 Cyborg Studies
PHLM001 Money, Ethics and Power

And these are cross-listed with Sociology. You won't get any of that at York where it will be a much more 'traditional' menu: Language, Mind, Epistemology, Logic, etc. But you might prefer the Exeter fare...
The two universities are totally different...

I know Exeter well: a great many students come from 'traditional' backgrounds (upper-middle class families; near London; white; conservative in politics and outlook). A lot of them go on to work in the financial sector (banks; management consultancy; investment management) so if your career ambitions lie in that direction then Exeter would be a good choice. If you want to do something more creative and less conventional, I think York would be a better option.

If you look at the top 4 rankings:

Exeter 7,10,10,13
York 12,13,15,17

Though Exeter is ahead in 3 of 4 of the rankings, there is not a huge difference. Lets just say both are excellent Universities.
