How does water affect carbon dioxide levels?

in the test for the production of carbon dioxide during photosynthesis , one leaf is placed in a conical flask with sodium hydroxide whereas the other is placed in water . (Apparently water increases the carbon dioxide levels ) .how is this so ?:confused:

Not so much. Rather, the sodium hydroxide will take in all the carbon dioxide from the air. So in the flask with sodium hydroxide, there is much less carbon dioxide for the plant. (which links to photosynthesis)

The water is just being used as a control here - a small volume of water will not have much effect on the carbon dioxide levels (so the levels are similar to the levels in normal air).
