It rather depends on which lab you are going in for placement. If you already know what discipline you will be going for then read up on that. If you are currently unsure then what the laboratory manager will be looking for is somebody who is keen, intelligent, well mannered and seems nice.

I realise that these are relatively generic qualities for any interview but then you are only going for a years placement and you will not be expected to know too much. Just be likeable.

If I can help with any further questions then please do ask. I am an experienced BMS in Microbiology.

It's done along side my course in year 2 rather than a year in placement, It's really concentrated and is done partly over easter and summer holidays over 14 weeks or something like that? We go to different departments within the hospital so choosing a discipline isn't necessary- though I like the look of Microbiology and Immunology(though on a lab your I went, Immuno doesn't have it's on department).

Immunology tends to be part of Haematology as a section rather than its own department. Likewise Serology/Virology is usually part of Microbiology.

Getting any lab experience as part of your course is definitely the way to go in the current climate.

Hi guys! I am a First year student studying Biomed at Keele university and have gotten onto the interview stage of the application onto the Applied route.
I was just wondering if anyone knew what kind of questions will be asked? - like any example questions?

Thanks!

You should be aware of the following:
The role of the HCPC (protect public)
Role of IBMS (protect the BMS)
Modernising Scientific Careers
The certificate of competence and registration portfolio
Agenda for change
Career opportunities (i.e. portfolio>graduate>band 5>specialist portfolio>band 6 etc.
May also be good to mention something about continuing professional development!!!

You may be asked what COSHH is - and I would also stress that you will work within you scope of practice, only do what you are told, question everything and carry out your training with respect towards confidential patient information.

I am in my final year of my applied biomedical sciences degree which included a placement year, and I have been offered a job in clinical chemistry starting as soon as I finish my exams! So feel free to PM if you want any help with the portfolio or the course.
