Capitalism. We need to be a powerful and competitive country, the free market(with a social contract). it the best way of achieving rapid economic growth without encroaching on the liberty of the citizens.

poll would be good. capitalism
Socialism any day, I'll swallow it even in the form of dictatorship of the proletariat: anything but the ruling class dictatorship that we currently have and there's no point in pretending that we don't.
Socialism. People always choose capitalism when their life is cooshty and subconsciously their mind is in selfish mode. Soon as you're on the other end of the scale, you realise how unjust capitalism is. Capitalism is good for some, socialism is better for ALL.

So heres a quick question for everyone...

If you had to make the decision to make Britain completely socialist or capitalist, which one would you choose and why?

Lets get a bit of a debate going!

Since you have pitted socialism with/against communism, I presume you have made a mistake about socialism. Socialism is not Communism. Communism and Capitalism are incompatible, unless we are talking about crypto-Communism. Socialism and Capitalism are compatible.

You mean Socialism. Capitalism is an economic doctrine, but a country cannot exist on a purely economic doctrine. It requires, amongst other things, a governing body to oversee production albeit limitedly, and a legislature of justice to ensure equality and fairness. This governance would have to be grounded in Socialism. It cannot be grounded in Communism because it is incompatible with Capitalism, and it sets the bar too low on the social scale.

We have a poll. It's called the elections. Even Labour has turned it's back on Socialism as they realise it only has a minority (If very vocal) support base.
capitalism's working out quite nicely for me at the moment so I'm gonna pick that one.
Socialists make me sick.

Depends which definition you're looking at. If Socialism refers to the original definition of "social[state] ownership of the means of production" then Capitalism is automatically vanquished as a result.

At the zenith of his utopian thought, Marx referred to Communism as the last stage of human development which should operate without the institutions of central government - or government at all - hence cannot be achieved through revolution/reform, but a natural development of society and mankind.

If we take the modern definition of Socialism as mixed economy, large welfare state and bourgeois democracy then yes, you're correct in saying the two systems are are compatible.

May I ask what inspired your choice of username? It just doesn't seem to fit hugely well with your views!

Socialism. Our happy days in this country were presided over by Socialist ideas (think post-war with introduction of NHS), our sad days were presided by Capitalist ideas (think Thatcher). Look at Socialist countries (such as many Scandanavian countries) high HDI, high happiness index (stragely a measurable thing apparently?), strong equality. Then look at the leaders of the Capitalist ideas (USA) with mass unemployment, one of the most unequal societies. Just think Socialism makes more sense...

Being an apolitical medical student from Poland, with realism and pragmatism as the governing thoughts on my societal outlook, this is how I react to the notion of central planning.
Capitalism im afraid, and as for what form of government? I would go with a Benevolent Dictatorship.

Hahahaha...

Whatever, let's try it again!

P.S we could potentially build Socialism without central planning.

Well you're an Imperial College Med Student... The chances of you being in the top 1% are quite extraordinary compared with the average member of British, Polish or German society - or any other indeed.

My family originally comes from Eastern Germany, and yet I spend my entire life trying to find an alternative to what is a socio-economic lack of justice: be it Socialism or whatever.

At least we have tried to built a better civilization - yes it has failed - but look at Capitalism: it fails and yet they keep going.

What if it was the 'butterfly effect' that caused our idea to fall? We shall keep going, permanent revolution, death or glory, freedom and dignity to the real wealth creators - power to the people!

Socialism.
