In fairness, he didn't say that you had requirements, just that you were "GCSE nazis" compared to Cambridge. I've seen far more people with low GCSEs being interviewed and made an offer by Cambridge than by Oxford.

The consensus on TSR is this (perhaps you can comment on it):
- The main criteria for interview at Oxford are your contextual GCSE results and your performance in the aptitude tests.
- AAA at AS-level will most likely secure interview at Cambridge, and they will accept more people with low GCSEs if they have high A-level UMS scores - information which Oxford doesn't receive.

Can I ask what the main factors are post-interview at Oxford, and where A-level results/predictions and the Personal Statement fit into the selection process?

I've seen that theory about a lot too, but little statistical evidence either way. I'd be interested to see some hard evidence on a course-by-course basis. I'm not enough of an expert to give a view on the Cambridge opinion of GCSEs, but what I can say is that for CompSci at Oxford, other factors really are a lot more important.

For Comp Sci, it's fair to say that the most important part of the short-listing process is the MAT test. As you rightly say we don't normally see UMS so (predicted) A Levels (etc) aren't the most helpful of factors in differentiating candidates. (IF someone includes a UMS score in a reference/PS that's helpful to us, as it's further evidence of a candidates' abilities, but it's not a requirement.) We don't need to rely on the PS as much as some unis as we interview and get to know the student a bit that way, so the PS isn't a particularly influential part of the application.

We normally call to interview a bit over half of those who apply. Once the MAT tests are in a rough "line in the sand" is drawn. Last year that was about the 52/3 mark in the test. Pretty much everyone over that was offered an interview. The tutors then have the freedom to also call to interview students who fell below that line. This is normally as a results of there being some kind of contextual information, or, for example, GCSE results that are particularly outstanding compared to everyone in their school. So yes, GCSEs do play a part here, but someone who's done well in the test will get called no matter what their GCSEs. A brilliant set of contextualised GCSEs isn't going to make up for a really poor test score, although it might pull a really boarder-line candidate over the line. Again a stunning PS might conceivably pull a boarder-line candidate over the line, but a weak PS isn't going to out-weight a good test score.

Our offers are based on three A Levels (we notice if candidates have done more but they don't form part of the offer) so it's perfectly realistic to apply having "only" got three As at AS.

Shortlisted students are then interviewed. Normally they get two interviews in their first choice college, and at least another interview in a second assigned college. (Other colleges may then also call them for interview.) This all happens over a roughly three day period.

At this point all of the tutors can see all the information we have on all of the shortlisted candidates: MAT scores (broken down by question), PS, preference, scores from all the interviews, GCSEs, predicted grades, etc. They can also see, for example, where a student has messed up their first interview, and then shone in the others. (This happens quite a bit, and really isn't a deal-breaker!)

The tutors are trying to get a self-consistant picture of a candidate's abilities and potential from all the information available. But there's no magic formular that says "PS is worth X% of the total score, GCSEs Y%." We are looking at small enough numbers of candidates at this point, that tutors really can take the time to look at someone as an individual.

Some students make it easy for us by performing really well across the board. It's the next set of candidates down, where the tutors will spend more time making up their minds. The tutors will set aside a factor when it's clear that it's not a true reflection of what a student can do. (A reference can be particularly helpful here, if there mitigating reasons for a unusually low performance in something.) So a student who's done well in the MAT and in the interviews will get offered a place, even if their GCSEs are notably below the average of other successful candidates.

Having decided who to make offers to these, (and the rejections) are all sent out, in late Dec/early Jan. When we make offers we fully-expect the students to be able to meet their A*AA (or equivalent offers), so we aren't significantly over offering. The tutors are working hard to make sure that we take the best candidates, no matter which college they have applied to, so some candidates will receive an offer from a college other than the one they applied to.

I hope that explains things from an Oxford CompSci perspective a bit more clearly. If anyone has equivalent information on the application process at Cambridge I'd be interested to hear it.
