I completed an access course last year, in social science and humanities, and just coming to the end of my first year at uni.

My course consisted of English and Maths level 2, which is just GCSE level, as well as 4 level 3 subjects; mine were History, Psychology, Sociology and Social Policy and Welfare. We also had to do an access project at the end, which was basically a research project on any one of the level 3 subjects you undertake. I was going on to read History, so I decided to do mine in that area, though it was on nothing that we had covered in the History module.

The amount of exams you do may vary, we only did one exam and the rest was essay, group and presentation based.

Good luck anyway, I'm sure you will enjoy it! Definitely the best decision I made, I feel more prepared for university and academic writing than a lot of the students just out of sixth form.

Im glad to hear that buddy what uni are you at? and how hard was the grading as I saw for say Manchester university you need 45credits at level 3 and the remainder at level 2? what subject where there to choose from? sorry for the questions I missed the main open day for the course ^^, cheers.

I'm currently doing an Access course in Humanities and Social Science. In my course, we've done Politics, Law, Sociology and Psychology (and study skills too). In politics we've covered Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Anarchism and Feminism. In Law, we've looked at Law and Justice, Legal Institutions, Consumer Law, Criminal Law and Law and the Individual. In sociology: the family, educational underachievement and crime/deviance. In Psychology: behaviourism, humanism, psychoanalysis and biopsychology for one unit, then early socialisation (attachment theory) and we're currently doing stress.

All but two units have been essay based. The other two are an exam and a presentation.

I can't remember exactly how the grading worked to be honest. I think 45 credits at level three isn't too bad, as long as you aim to get at least merits in all level three modules, preferably one or two at distinction, then you should be fine.

I got conditional offers from all 5 I applied to and, even though I was slightly below some of the requirements for the unis, got offers from Newcastle and Manchester. Ended up going to York St John in the end though! Didn't fancy a big city to be honest!

I have a feeling that universities are more inclined to take on mature students, even when they don't quite reach the entry requirements specified.
