Ahhh, much more understandable. so the answer should be in pounds £P+5x and in pence P+500x?

Hint:

Would it be something along the lines of:

50-x=y

850/x

850/y

or x+y=50
50-x=y

850/x

850/y

How about:
 25(50x)+15x=850\ 25(50 -x) + 15x = 850 Do you see what I did here? :smile:

Yeah i get it, so this will give me;

1250-25x+15x=850

Would something else need to be done to this equation now?

I'm assuming you want a direct solution so here goes:

1) a.
The basic cost is £P. Then x pence is added per mile driven. x pence is
£(x/100). So the total cost in pounds is £P+(x/100).

b.
You can convert the previous answer by multiplying by 100 to get:
100P+x pence

2) a.
The shopper buys 50 fruit. x are oranges. Logically speaking, the lemons must be what is left over from 50 after x orange so the number of lemons would be 50-x

b.
Since lemons cost 25 pence you simply multiply the number of lemons by 25 pence/lemon which gets you 1250-25x pence {just 25(50-x) works too - its easier to use for mental arithmetic and is simplified}

c. The shopper has bought x oranges at 15 pence each so the total cost is 15x pence.

(The last two answers can be converted to punds as well)

d.
x*orange's cost + (50-x)*lemon's cost = 850 (I converted it to pence for simplicity)
This simplifies to:
15x + 25(50-x) = 850 (Keep going from here:smile:
15x + 1250 - 25x = 850
15x - 25x = 850 - 1250
-10x = -400
x = 40

You wrote find the cost of the lemons but thats already given as 25 pence. I'm assuming you meant number of lemons so:

Since x is the number of oranges and 50-x the number of lemons, the shopper bought 40 oranges and 10 lemons. {50-40=10}

Hope this helped

Oh sorry about that, I'm new and everything. I tried to walk through all the steps so it wasn't just the answers. Is it possible to add a spoiler tag?
