I'm doing rivers, coasts, population and health, I have a pretty good idea what may be up on coasts and rivers but any guesses for health and coasts? Also for the coastal flooding case studies are we supposed to know examples for poor and rich countries because so far I've only learnt the Tsunami one. Plus what figures do you think we should know from the local area healthcare case study?


Health - healthcare systems have never come up, so they may come up, and there hasn't been a question on regional or local healthcare issues for a while so there's a chance of that

NHS in the uk, the pluralistic system in the us, and the socialised system in Cuba, those are the ones I studied

Please can somebody tell me if we need to know a case study for both poor and rich areas for coastal flooding!!!

Well I'm guessing soft/ hard engineering probably won't come up because thats been around loads over recent years. They haven't done much on rejuvenation recently so I have a feeling that may come up. Also coastal flooding may come up. They haven't' really done a really long question on landforms caused by fluvial deposition before so that could also come up.

Then for coasts I'm a little less sure but again soft and hard engineering have been coming up a lot recently and I think that a coastal flood hasn't been mentioned for a while so that could appear.

So when it asks 'For a case study...' You do JUST one, but if it is a question like 'Assess the impacts of human and physical factors on flooding' you can include as many examples as you like!

I agree but they have asked it so many times just in different ways, so im thinking possibly there could be something on periglacial landforms...


But because Antarctica came up in Jan 13, I think we will get a landforms 15 marker...

Instead of France, would Australia work, eg encouraging larger families, with paid paternal leave and baby grants, and promoting skills based migration??

Talk about how a river has equally spaced pools and riffles, as the water passes into the pools they gain energy and as the pass over riffles they lose energy because of the friction. Eventually this makes the rivers flow unequal.

pools=reduced friction, deeper areas, increased velocity so INCREASED EFFICIENCY----Forms the outside bend---fastest flow hits side of channel---abrasion and hydraulic action lead to the formation of a river cliff which is asymmetrical and deeper so increased velocity and efficiency

riffles= increased friction, less velocity and competence/capacity so deposition=DECREASED EFFICIENCY------forms inside bend where the POINT BAR is formed the riffles deflect and intercept the river flow...DEPOSITION and slow water movement so competence/capacity decreases and friction increases (leading to deposition)


helical flow-this is the 'corkscrew-like movement of the water in swirls that maintains the asymmetrical channel shape

YOU CAN THEN GO ON TO TALK ABOUT HOW AN OX-BOW LAKE IS FORMED AS A RESULT OF NARROWING AND EROSION WHEN THE 2 NECKS MEET, leaving a meander scar.

turbulence increases in the pools causing helicoidal flow which spirals from bank to bank, and causes erosion on the banks it hits and deposition on the opposite bank as the water has less velocity there. the deposition cause a slip off slope and the erosion forms a steep river cliff, the combined erosion and deposition result in an asymmetric channel and the widening of meanders.

so what lanforms are made of fluvial deposition? I hate the names like that...why can't they just say 'meanders' or 'waterfall'? How do you know these names like what landform to use when about erosion or deposition etc? I hope rejuvenation comes up but i hope hard/soft engineering does not come up!
