Questions about university!

I'll be going to Nottingham in september and i just have a few of those little random questions that i've been thinking about , don't have to be specific to Nottingham but yeah.

1) In catered halls do people go and eat in groups or do people just go down whenever they're hungry and eat by themself/just with whoever is at the table? Is the food decent too? I'm not expecting it to be amazing but as long as its alright.

2) Are you allowed people who don't go to the university to stay in your room overnight? (as in boyfriend)

3) (These next few are a bit specific to nottingham) For the meal card, are most places "take away", as in can you take the food back to your room to eat it there? Or is most of it sit in style?

4) What are the university park gym facilities like - is it worth the money to buy gold membership?

5) I'm not really that much of a "going out to drink" person, but I also don't want to be lonely during freshers.. what do people like me do?

I know some of them are stupid questions but hey...

Well i can say to question 5 that i am also one of those people who don't go out to drink so i am guessing there will be more people who enjoy different things!! So you wont be alone

Hi there
1) Generally people go in groups but I know some who go down whenever they're hungry  food is okay, not brilliant but edible

2) As far as I'm aware, yes.

3) You can do either, up to you!

4) That's personal preference really. I bought silver membership in January and have just upgraded to gold and I'm quite happy with it but only one of my friends has gold. Weights room is quite busy but I never go in there. Main gym has good amount of cardio machines and weights stuff. Plus you get classes for free which I like

5) There's loads of non-drinking stuff going on in freshers. I'm not one of those people at all and I did just fine  you will have to make an effort but there's so many freshers who are the same so I'm sure you'll find them! I did and I'm not the most social :P

This is definitely not true! One of my closest friends is a Medic and they are very accommodating with the schedule - Medics have their own Week One Reps, Karni Reps and sports teams so you don't miss out on any of that whilst getting to know other medics (important as it's a 5 year course and most of your fresher friends will leave after 3 or 4 years..). That said my friend still socialises as much as the rest of us do both with hall friends and Medics. Also, don't worry about knowing every person in your year, that's basically impossible unless you're a particularly gifted BNOC - I have a few close friends in halls, a wider group in halls who I go out with, a few course friends who I see at lectures, sports team friends and friends from the two societies I'm a member of.

Hope this helps!

I know this has been answered but I thought I'd give you another point of view anyway!

1) I typically go down with the group I would consider my closest friends but sometimes, if I need to eat quickly or at a time that's awkward for them I'll just go down and sit with other friends - meals are probably the best way to meet people in your first few weeks  The food is definitely not amazing but it is good, I reckon school dinners were definitely worse! Some nights are better than others in terms of choice and personal taste but if you particularly like something the chefs want to know and they do listen to us when we've asked for changes (for example, in my hall brunch didn't used to open until 11.30 but those of us on sports teams that trained on the weekends always had to ask for a packed meal, we suggested that the cold food (cereal, toast, etc.) was put out and drinks machines turned on at 10.30 when the dining room staff arrived, this now happens every weekend).

2) Yes, not a problem at all. They just have to fill out a short form with their name and how long they're staying at reception for fire safety regulations and you're set.

3) Anything you get in Portland (Man's Chinese, Starbucks, Chicken Joes, Pizza Pasta, Baguette Bar, Salad Bar, Item Seven, etc.) or at the Hallward Cafe on Uni Park or the Atrium on Jubilee can be eat in or take away, just ask when you order.

4) Gym facilities are decent but usually quite busy at peak times. I've found that going just after the morning rush works the best  If you join a sports team, many of them require you to have at least Bronze membership in order to train (to be allowed into the space you use and for insurance purposes). I had this most of this year but when I started going to classes I upgraded to Gold because it was worth it for me. It's going to be a personal choice as to what level you choose according to how much you use the gym and whether or not you want to do classes.

5) I was totally like you during Freshers - though now the year is drawing to an end I have become a bit of an Ocean addict  They have lots of alternative events throughout Freshers week but I would honestly recommend going to as many of the main nights out as possible - I really feel like I missed out by only going on two of them. No one forces you to drink and your Week One Reps have to stay sober for then entire night so you won't be the only sober one there! The Week One nights out are also a really good way to get to know the student nightlife in Nottingham and give you an idea of which ones you like and don't like.

Hope this is helpful and congrats on getting in to Notts  definitely the best thing that ever happened to me, hopefully it will be for you too!

Worth noting on question 2 that there is a limit on how many consecutive nights they can stay, but it's easily enough to cover a weekend

I think it's going to depend on your hall and how strict they are.. I was never aware of any limit, but my ex stayed with me for over a week on 2 occasions in first term so I think as long as you doing cause a problem for others they're quite lenient if there is a set limit, FloBo are anyway!
