I might see you in Esslemont then  and I thought Burnett is for post grad students? Well I haven't personally seen any shared bathrooms, only heard from some friends from different universities that they aren't very clean, generally not very nice, and always better to go ensuite if you can.

Yeah possibly  oh really? I don't know, they just always seem to group them together when talking about them so I wasn't sure, thanks for pointing that out! Ah right okay, well I'll look into it, thanks for the advice!

Hey, you get information sent out to you in May if you've firmed a conditional or unconditional offer, and you just take it from there

Is this also the case if you picked them as your insurance choice?

Anyway, if anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

Hey  Do you know anyone who lives in New Carnegie, and their opinions of it? I was wondering, is it really worth paying that little bit more just to have a bathroom to yourself?

Btw, just found this: "
It is too early to apply for Session 2013-14, you will be able to apply from Monday 20 May once you have received correspondence from Student Recruitment with your 8 digit Student ID number." so not long now : )

Hey, I’m currently a first year staying at Hillhead so thought I give a bit of information about the accommodation here for anyone interested!

Adam Smith (all girls), Fyfe (all boys), Wavell (boys ground and 2nd floor, girls 1st and 3rd) I currently staying in Adam Smith (so maybe I’m being a bit biased here :P ) but I definitely think these are the accommodation which is the best value for money. They may be only £89 a week but that does not reflect in the quality. They were refurbished in 2010 and still maintain the modern standard today. It is because other buildings have been refurbished this year that they have reduced the price from £99 a week (which we are paying at the moment) to only £89. Plus they are the only accommodation blocks who have a cleaner which cleans the kitchens, toilets and showers Monday to Friday! Some people seem to freak out at the idea of 19 people sharing 4 toilets and 4 showers but really there is not an issue here. I (and the majority of people) have never had to wait for a toilet or shower, plus they are cleaned 5 days a week so are always clean! They are great buildings as well for socialising because you are not restricted to seeing the same people in your flat every day, like you would in the other buildings, as there are 19 people in each L shaped corridor to socialise with! There is also a TV lounge in each building with sofas & chairs and a TV which anyone in the building can use (as well as holding the occasionally parties!) The rooms in these buildings are also the biggest I believe (you can easily fit a double blow up bed on the floor!) and you get a massive wardrobe and sink in your room! So really I thought £99 was good value for money but £89 is even better!

Esslemont House Refurbishment here has just been completed and as can be seen in the pictures it is very nice and modern! It is much better value for money than South House but compared to Adam Smith etc the bedroom are much smaller. But if you want cheap, modern accommodation which is in flats then this is the place!

Keith House As can be seen in the pictures it’s not the nicest accommodation that is offered, with small rooms and old style kitchens. I’ve also heard from one of my friends who stay there that if you use the oven of the cooker and the hobs at the same time it usually doesn’t cook your food! But they are certainly liveable and very cheap!

South House Mostly positive reviews about the accommodation but most people say it is too expensive for what you get. You would be better off with Esslemont!

New Carnegie What I hear from most people who stay there is that it is very nice and modern but it is not worth the £142 a week just for an ensuite! If you want modern you would be better off with Esslemont or Adam Smith etc.

I don’t know much about Burnett House or North Court as there for post grads but Burnett is currently being refurbished just like Esslemont and North Court is similar to South House

Hillhead itself is about a 20 minute walk from uni if you take the longer way through the streets but if you go through Seaton Park (which most students do) then you can get there in 10-15 minutes. If anyone has any questions about the accommodation or the university I’d be happy to answer them!

I was wondering - does single-sex mean that the whole building is single-sex, or does it only mean that the specific dorm is single-sex? I don't mind sharing a dorm with both girls & boys. Also, I wouldn't want to live in a building full of only boys/girls etc.

Anyone with answers? /Swedish student

First, thanks for your post! Great with a little help. Secondly, do you know how they sort out flatmates? Is it just first come first served (aka random) or do you have to fill out a form about interests, habits etc.?

As far as I'm aware it is just the individual flats within each of the buildings which are single-sex with the exception of Adam Smith and Fyfe which are all girls/boys

Flatmates are just sorted at random. Sometimes you will be with people on your course or a similar course by complete coincidence, but mostly you aren't. Its good that way though as you get to meet people who have different views and interests
Hey guys, I was just wondering how everybody applied? Did you do it online or get any info through the mail? I m visiting aberdeen at the end of the month so hopefully if I plan in advance where I want to go, I can take a look around whilst I am there and if it looks good have my accomidation sorted pretty much straight after.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hey, I think you're meant to get an accommodation pack sent to you in the post as you can only start applying from the 20th, but I don't know if anybody's received this yet.

Thanks. I though a pack would come through when I firmed by offer but that was almost a month ago and was worried one might not show up. Well I am visiting on the 28th so if it comes before then I will look over the options and hopefully have everything sorted by the end of the month. It was just a bit worrying as other people have already done their accomidation.

Thank you for the response.

I wouldn't worry, I thought that too but it seems we're not the only ones so don't worry  aw that's great - enjoy your visit! Oh really? I didn't think anybody had yet, I know where I want to apply but I didn't know anyone had been able to yet since it doesn't open till the 20th?

It's not a problem

Anyone going for crombie or johnston?

So, which one is closest to the uni - wavell or esslemont?
Just finished applying, hoping for Wavell!

Aberdeen is my insurance choice - when can I apply for accommodation? Do I have to wait till results day? Hope I don't!

When choosing accommodation, why is Adam Smith, wavell and Fyfe all clumped together as one choice? Adam Smith would be my last choice, whilst Wavell would be my first...

It asks you if you prefer single or mixed sex accomodation. Wavell is mixed and Adam Smith and Fyfe are single so I'm guessing they'll place according to what choice you made

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii guys :P

Im doing Chemical Engineering hopefully if i get in :P

So i have this prob...... I can go to the Carnegie court or to the south house since they are in my price range.... BUT..... Problems :

1. Spending sooo much on a room doesnt seem right to me since primarily students need to save money.
2. Don't want to pick a private flat since i hear that its difficult to socialize
3. My Girlfriend said " LOOK PICK A PLACE WITH ALL GUYS...... I cant stand the fact that you might be with "other" girls... u pervert" LOL and i havent even done anything...... but she is my life sooo i guess its single sex... right?? :P
4. How long do students actually spend in their rooms?? Provided i dont party like at all, once in like 7-8 months :P ( dont drink or smoke etc so i like to stay away from that stuff)

So i guess its Fyfe for me... soooo on a serious note how is the place??

Thanks

Hey, I'm doing English and Scottish literature  I'm sure you'll be fine, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Okay well I'll answer this by each question :P

1. Fair enough, as like you say you might want to save money. On the online application it lets you rank accomodation from 1-5 in order of preference. Esslemont is £104 a week and it's newly renovated flats, they're really nice!

2. Oh okay, but you'll be friends with your flatmates and people you meet on your course, and people at clubs and societies you join. Just think, loads of people stay in flats and they socialise just fine, so I think if you go to uni with the right mindset it doesn't really matter where you stay. But I guess rooms in the corridors have the advantage of a whole lot people on one floor which is good, but I don't think you'll be at a disadvantage socially opting for a flat.

3. Alrighty then, well it's really up to you at the end of the day haha, but most flats are single-sex anyway, and it tends to be like boys flats on one floor, girls on others, so it's pretty likely you will be in single sex accomodation.

4. By that do mean on a day-to-day basis or in terms of a lease? For leases they're all round about between 37 and 40 something weeks. On a daily basis that kinda depends. If you're doing a busy course you'll be in lectures more, if you join a lot of clubs/societies you'll be out more, if you like partying you'll be doing that, so really just depends on you and what you like to do

Fyfe, like Adam Smith and Wavell was renovated in 2010 so the kitchens are modern, and the bedrooms are pretty big too, there's a lot of picture on the uni website!
