how would you integrate x(x^2 +5)^1/2 using the substitution u=x^2 +5
i know it's integration by substitution, but i keep getting it wrong:frown: help

Ok whenever you have a integration you must differentiate your 'u'

u=x^2+5
du/dx=2x. Therefore du=2x

Take a factor of a half out of your integral. giving 1/2Int(2x(x^2+5)^0.5)dx

You can then swap the 2x*dx with du

Giving 1/2Int(u^0.5)du

Integrating that gives 1/2{(2u^(1.5))/3 + c}

Such in your 'u'

giving ((x^2+5)^1.5)/3 + c

Haha. Go on see what wolfram reckons you're aiming for :tongue:

It's a fairly standard example.
If you post some working I can spot a mistake

:lol: Exam stress -it's gotta be

YUP, I actually think i'm stressing at the mo, my dogs getting jealous that i'm spending time with my niece, difficult looking after two babies, let alone chem revision LOL
The good news is, mathematical knowledge makes all my chem calculations seem easy even though I haven't learn them

ln's squareroots q's, a's, b's galore :lol:

I think you should give me a step by step solution :colone:

111/150, I done unit 1 and the practical, I only got 61/90 for the exam in Jan (I spent my time going out/eating instead of prep) and 50/60 for the practical :smile:

I don't blame you, if I were doing Chem, I'd definitely spent my time going out and eating (or doing maths) instead of revising too :colone:

You've let me down and there was me thinking you're good at Maths :wink:

Edit: In case you couldn't tell this was just sarcasm, of course you're good at Maths!! :tongue:

In like half an hour...precisely the amount of time it'll take me to deal with the LaTeX :colone:

I'm rather looking forward to the solution as I want to know how he progressed from what I obtained as I've taken his hint and tried to do it in that form but just stopped once I had 2 quadratics inside one another! It does look rather horrific if that's the correct way to go about it :redface:
