I'm doing it, seems like most others on here are doing 4C or 4D :frown:

Does anyone have any ideas what is likely to come up? I think it's nationalism's turn not to come up as the 45 marker, which means I'll probably end up answering the feminism one because I hate multiculturalism, haha.

Also doing this exam, must be one of the only people who doesn't like nationalism!
Ecologism and Feminism are great, so long as there are essays and SAQs available on them I'll be fine, though I wouldn't mind a multiculturalism SAQ

is multiculturalism seen as 'harder' to the examiners?

I only got taught feminism, ecologism and multiculturalism, and now have got only 5 days to learn them!

Nah not really they are judged equally. Like in unit 3 I would say socialism is the hardest as there is a lot more content but it is regarded the same as the others.

Not even started revising for this yet, been preoccupied with the other politics unit 3 exam, and not confident at all about nationalism particularly. Will start cramming it after my English exam on Thursday b

Erm I don't know off the top of my head which specific feminists argue what, but...

Sex is defined as biological differences such as anatomy and also natural things such as men being naturally stronger and women being more suited to domestic roles. Gender is seen by most feminists as an artificial social divide in contrast to sex.

Public private divide relates to the belief feminists have, particularly radical feminists, about the roots of patriarchy existing in the family set-up; men are encouraged if not expected to be the 'breadwinners' whereas women are expected to be consigned to domestic roles and this is instilled in society from an early age, therefore entrenching patriarchy. This belief is expressed through the belief 'the personal is the political' radical socialists propose in contrast to liberal feminists' separation of the two spheres.

Hi guys, just creating an essay question for "How and why have feminists been critical of the public/private divide?" (15) Could someone check over it and give a grade, and how to improve? If it's good enough you guys can use it as a resource :smile:

The public/private divide is a particular concern for feminists. The public/private divide is a divide between the public sphere of work and politics, naturally dominated by men, and the private sphere of home and family, to which women are mainly confined. This divide creates the perfect background for sexual inequality, as women are restricted to pursuing careers of being a housewife, rather than entering the public sphere and getting a job. It also creates the perfect background for a sustainable patriarchy. Patriachy (the rule of the father), extends into both the public/private sphere by the sexual division of labour. Thinkers such as Greer or Firestone see patriarchy reflecting the sexual exploitation and subordination of women via the male/female relationship.

Liberal feminist believe in the public/private is of less importance. They do not want to eradicate the public/private sphere, because they believe in maintaining women's personal freedom of choice between a domestic or public role. This is because freedom is a far more important concept which makes us an individual; each individual must have the right to decide how she wishes to lead her own life. Moreover, the public/private divide allows us to have a right to privacy, and should not be abolished, the state could get too involved in someone's lifestyle, and therefore be subjected to increasing totaltarianism. For example, if a woman wishes to be a cook for her husband, it is of no concern for the state. However, if a woman is being discriminated against in the workplace, then it is a public matter and should be addressed for greater equality. Therefore, Liberal Feminists seek legal reforms eg the equal pay act.

Radical Feminists are critical of the public/prviate divide. They criticise liberal feminists for leaving the private circumstances of women to individuals. Exploitation rules in the private sphere, and therefore dominats the public. Thinkers such as Millet suggest that the relationship between men and women is a power based one; men use their dominative role to distort biological differences between men and women, so they can justify their patriarchal position. This power-based relationship is the strongest form of a relationship and links to the idea of "The Personal is Political", where all relations between men and women are political, even work, sexual or family, eg Millet: "Patriarchy is the chief institution of the family."
Radical Feminists suggest then the only way to get rid of this divide is to have a psychological revolution. For example, women could develop their own conciousness and separate from men, and form their own communities, or live in an androgynous world; so true gender equality can exist, and end patriarchy. Another suggestion is to get rid of the traditional nuclear family, and instead live in a group, so people can be raised without subjection from men, according to Greer. This will make the opposition regards to patriarchy in the public/private unsustainable.

I am doing it! I think if we were to be asked an ecologism question they are so limited in what they can ask, and it was a horrible one from january 2013 paper, it could be nice! Some of my friends have left out nationalism BUT i think leaving one out is such a risk!!! The unit 3b paper from 4th june was a nice paper, so hoping this one is too

I thought unit 3 was nice. I did the Socialism rejecting Capitalism question. As for unit 4 don't expect a nationalism 45 marker!
