**A2 Classical Civilisation**

I kinda hated it But that's my own fault because I was really risky with my priorities with which modules I revised!

I did the temples question and the last essay question on archaic art!

The key point in a forty marker is "comparing to classical values". By classical values I thought values which the audience would value, so I stuck with that and compared my view to theirs. Should be fine!

It's true, just referring to the text is enough

I chose Antigone, I didn't like either of them though!

That exam was horrendous! :/

I did Antigone and the deserved fate. I thought Antigone was okay, not brilliant but not excessively bad. I think my 10 mark response was kinda short though, I only wrote 3 paragraphs or so, basically a page. And then my 20 mark took me ages! I don't even know how or why.

I was left with about 40 minutes for the 40 mark question, and I completely rushed it. I think I just started reciting about what happened in the plays and why most of the characters didn't deserve their fate. I only factored in the Athenian audience about three times...

Oh well, I only need a B overall in this subject and it's always been my worst subject, but I think I'm gunna struggle to get a C now haha. My teacher always said that they're really generous in the exam though, so I hope that's still the case 'cause I'm gunna need it xD

Ah! My class has been referring to 'Early Classical' throughout the year and only last night our teacher emailed us saying 'oh by the way they might use the term 'Transitional' for 'Early Classical' - we were all like . And I heard it was 80% for an A, but hopefully you're right!

You'll have done fine, you don't need more than a page for the ten mark questions, and I only did half of one, (oops, ran out of time to do it ) and it sounds like you answered the forty marker fine!

What's your other module?

Tiberius and Claudius; my college has had the worst teacher in the world for it haha.

She introduced herself to the class by saying 'Hi. I'm usually a drama teacher, but the college needed a history teacher and I did a semester or two of this at uni. I failed it though, but I'm sure you guys will be fine' and pretty much told the class to go home every lesson. So... I don't think that's going well either hahaha .

And I hope so, like I said I only need a B overall and I got an A and B last year, with an overall grade of B so. I think if I get about a B in Greek, and C in Romans I'll get a B over all.

Oh! Yikes, that's pretty erm, well. Sounds like you're doing really well at it though! (Mines a similar situation so I can sympathise, I'm the only one in the class and my teacher has never taught it before, though she did do it at uni) good luck with the Tiberius and Claudius exam, I'm studying it too and it's so hard! The amount of stuff we need to remember is awful!

And by the way, does anyone know if I'm likely to lose marks if I didn't take a balanced approach to the Antigone question?

I found the Art & Arch. alright! I did vases and free-standing. A bit cheeky of them to ask a question to do with a vase that's not on the syllabus. It kind of slowed me down having to analyse it first, but still doable. Free-standing was a very nice question though. Happy overall!

Did anyone do the Hippolytus context for the Greek tragedies paper? What did anyone write for the question about Theseus' actions being motivated by grief?!

what do you mean by balanced approach? I just mentioned how Antigone was pride filled, then Creon, then mentioned a few points why they were justified. Also mentioned how Haemon and the mum died and they weren't filled with pride or stubborness.
Antigone was technically a martyr who got it wrong and Creon was a tyrant who believed state aw was the way to go, thats how i put it :/

I did. I divided my answer into two:

The first half dealt with the ways in which grief clearly overrode Theseus' judgement: his hasty decision to exile, his primary insistence on believing Phaedra over Hippolytus, his shock 'If only we could tell a good man from a bad man as we can counterfeit coins' or something to that effect.

In the second half I looked at how other motivations were suggested: Theseus' fear that Hippolytus wanted to usurp the throne, the condemnation of his character: vegetarian, practitioner of Orphic rites, men are just as likely to do this sort of thing as women, I also popped a counter argument for my first section: maybe his hasty decision shows that this was the excuse Theseus was waiting for.

I did the Greek tragedy paper today, I've forgotten what I wrote for a lot of it. I managed to get in a few half-quotes and references while talking about 5th Century BC Greek audiences which i'd only read about this morning!

Can anyone please remind me of the wording of the second 40 marker question was? As soon as a leave an exam it disappears from my mind.

It was either how far/to what extent do the main characters in the tragedies deserve what happens to them? Good luck with the Alexander paper! Did you choose Antigone or Hippolytus for Section 1?

I did Hippolytus, i'd read a lot about it last night so I felt more prepared. I've never really warmed to Antigone anyway. Which did you do? I thought they were good questions, I was praying that choruses weren't going to come up on the 40 markers

Haha don't worry I know how you feel- it's all a blur! Well I hated both but chose Antigone as I liked the 20 marker better. They were ok, could have been worse. I did the same 40 marker as you I thought it was good- god knows why anyone would choose the first one! So was I, the Chorus are difficult to write a lot about. The Aeneid far easier than Greek Tragedy but more boring haha.
