What would happen if you got on a train without a ticket

Say if you wanted to go from birmingham to London and you just hopped on the train without a ticket in thr hope that the ticket inspector doesn't come (because it's not 100% certain they check all tickets). However he did come and you tried to avoid him bu hiding under a table or going to the bathroom but he finds you and i say that I've dropped something on the floor which is why I'm underneath the table. The he asks to see my ticket and I rummage through my bags to convince him that I bought one. However I say that I lost it and I don't have the money to pay for a new one.
What would happen to me?

You'd be given a penalty fine and kicked off the train at the next station most likely.

You get a fined on the spot, but if you can't pay it, I think they send a letter to your house. Don't risk it though because this happened to one of my friends and she had a court case against her :\

How would you get on the train in the first place? Surely both Birmingham and London stations have ticket barriers?

You won't necessarily get fined, if they believe you just lost it they may just ask you to buy one - happened to me before. But if you refuse to pay, police as others have said, so don't do that.

My mum used to breastfeed my baby sister when the ticket inspectors came past. They would become really flustered and tell her not to worry about it. We also used to hide in the toilets a lot. We were rarely caught.
Edit- forgot to add, I was six years old and had no say in this. So get off your high horses.

Couldn't somebody just simply hide in the toilets throughout the whole journey and not get caught by the ticket inspector?
If they do catch you either you'll have to buy a fare, or they'll give you a fine, if you refuse then expect to be greeted by the police on the next stop.
It really isn't worth the hassle especially with the hefty fines and all the ticket barriers, there's a very good chance you'll get caught and then you'll be crying when you see the fine.

Also, I've heard of some people pretending to be fast asleep when the ticket inspector comes round.
But apparently the inspectors do try to wake you up...
That can be quite funny especially if the guy is blatantly pretending to be sleeping!

When I was younger, me and my friends would sit at one end of the train and when we seen the ticket inspector in the next carriage we would get off at the next stop and run all the way to the other side of the train where he/she had already checked all of the tickets, all to save £2.

Happened to me once. I got on a train at an unmanned station, so could not buy a ticket. The ticket inspector didn't come around, I got off at another unmanned station.
