Is anyone other than me doing Nietzsche - Beyond Good and Evil for unit 4? I feel like my college have given us the short straw with what is such a boring topic!

please help please please please, I want to do one that applies to Hume, I am already studying Phil of Religion, I need another :frown:

I'm not sure if it specifically relates to Hume, but Moral Philosophy is a pretty good topic. Realistically only 3 possible questions can come up (obviously with variants) , and it is not hard to get a grasp of imo

I am confused, why would you need this when the PHIL3 exam has already taken place? If you happen to mean PHIL4, of course go with Hume's An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding...

Hey guys, I have plato on Thursday and I'm really struggling on a few key points :frown:

I think I'm okay with the similies but I'm really struggling to get my head around
- philosopher kings and education
- the argument from opposites
- the faculties argument
- the third man argument

Also my essay writing usually goes very bad has anyone got any tips on how to structure an essay? Thank you xx

Hi guys,
I did the human nature question and just did all ideologies and expanded into each point and compared it to the last and rounded off with a general conclusion because I didn't know what to write haha! I did the obvious ones ( anarchism, Marxism, liberal, conservative and socialist) and just wrote what I remembered for the state of nature/ any other people like Mill Harm Principle and even a bit of Devlin and the private sphere! I'm happy with this but from the looks of it, I probably didn't write any of those specific things I saw on a few posts like The states being an organic entity or instrument of oppression, but i hope i pick up marks for writing about Plato's ship of state! I did refer to the state a lot as opposed to political authority ( I just wasn't sure if there was any other way to write about political authority so just assumed I could get away with referring to it as the state)
For Moral I stuck with the practical ethics question. It was so weirdly worded, what the heck?! I did have to think for a second because i thought it was trying to catch me out somewhere with the whole one or more theory and pick your own problem. I did abortion and wrote about 3 types of utilitarianism and compared that with deontology( Kant / Christian ethics).
Would be nice to hear what others have done differently too!

Now on to Mill!
Any predictions for the questions, or good links I can use to revise for it?! My teacher said they'll ask something relevant to chapter 2, applications, or even chapter 1 (they apparently asked the other chapters recently but again just a thought) and probably the essay on democracy.

I'm so scared for the Mill paper! The harm principle would be ideal, but democracy might be alright too, I suppose...hopefully :tongue:

I think maybe they'll be a politics one about Plato's lack of respect for the common man, and whether that destroys his argument. Hoping for morality and politics questions as they're the modules I did in PHIL3 so I think I'll have more to say.
I think you might be right about the rulers, I dont think they'll do a normal 15 mark analogy one because AQA seen to be changing all their exams a bit this year :smile:

That was definatly the problem however i dont think it wanted a narow focus on substance dualism, i used that for my first 3rd, then talked about anomilous monism and the fact that supervenience leads to epiphnom. which would make it a mistake the mind interacts with the body as it would be innert, that was the second third, i then said that it seems it dosnt interact with the body if we viewthe mind in the conventional context leading me on the the premis of what dennet talks about in his book consciousness explained (instrumentalist) which means we could view the mind as the brain (eliminative materials) which lead me to the conclusion yes / no depending on which veiw we take.

I guess you could talk just about dualism but you would have to give lots of critiques relevant to the interaction propblem, i could only thinkof ryles foders and humes in the exam so went fro the wider answer.

When talking about justice for Plato, would we have to go through the whole Socrates, Thrasymachus, Polemarchus, Cephalus discussion then onto the just individual and just state?

This has a biography and an essay about Hume's scepticism that I found very helpful. It's very cheap so I would recommend buying it just for those sections. The rest of it is quite difficult and more relevant to the Treatise than the Enquiry. Make sure you read sections I and XII of the Enquiry, despite them not being on the syllabus, as they will help you understand Hume's project.

Yes, but not in great detail for Polemarchus or Cephalus.

You also need to throw Adimantus (shows religion to be corrupt and justice is not a value in itself but a means of gaining an admirable reputation) and Glaucon ('Ring of Gynes', the outcomes for the just and unjust man, the origins of justice, his contribution to the 'Three Classes of Good' and his brief point on how religion is corrupt in matters of justice) in there too.

Erm, Thrasymachus is pretty important in the "might is right" argument, the "sheperd analogy" and generall showing, (alike Glaucon through the 'ring of gynes'), that injustice is a virtue.
