I guess it is an example of ableism. But such circus' did exist where they had 'freaks' on display during that era. Therefore the film was portraying what was only the norm in that environment. It is merely a reflection of society rather than the film director.
It is like Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and the books profuse usage of the 'N word'. It is not that Mark Twain was racist, but that the book was a reflection of the society.

Yeah, of course he did it with honourable intentions but with it being the early days of cinema and years before disability rights were even a thing he completely misjudged the effect the film would have on the audience and basically opened up the circus freak market to the cinematic form, which was a bit of an own goal given his intention was to represent the disabled as the good guys in the film.

As for Huckleberry Finn, whilst it could be written off as a reflection of the society there's a thing called artistic license which is bloody useful in situations like that, it's been used across all art forms from literature to cinema to songwriting where the rawness of realism has been sacrificed for the sake of taste and decency, Huckleberry Finn could've benefitted from that treatment.

Well, I doubt it :redface:

Prom the night before. Then preparing for the engagement thing, then it'll happen in the evening.

Because I live so far away, getting into town will take an hour and then back an hour too!

If I lived in city centre I'd definitely come and say hello
