M1 question

A particle P is projected vertically upwards from a point X. 5 seconds later P is moving downwards with speed 10ms^-1. Find the speed of projection of P.

I got 59ms^-1 but the answers say 39ms^-1

Check your signs are correct. Haven't done the q but must be a sign error somewhere e.g did you use a as 9.8 or -9.8 , are you using upwards as positive etc

Let upwards=+

S=? U=? V=-10 a=-9.81 t=5

The equation a=(v-u)/t will help as we are interested in fining U.

-9.81=(-10-U)/5

You do the rest.
