Lancaster University College System
Hi all, I'm wanting to apply to Lancaster for 2014 to do Biomedical Science and I was just wondering if any prospective students or current students have any comments about which colleges are "best", I've read about them all on the university website but cannot pick which one would be best for me, I'd like to apply for one with a good social scene and obviously one that is good for those choosing to do science, any ideas?

Every current student will say that their college is the best, except for Cartmel students who will tell you to avoid Cartmel like the plague because it's terrible (and yes, I was a Cartmel student).

A long way from the middle of campus, a long way from the other colleges, the college bar is always empty, the college social nights are generally terrible because no matter how hard the exec try nobody ever bothers to go, it's used by the University as a dumping ground for asian students and they tend to only socialise amongst themselves.

Bowland. I was a Grizedale student and I freely admit Bowland is way better than Grizedale. There's a proper community spirit, the bar is really nice and really good value for money accommodation. Plus you can roll out of bed 5 minutes before lectures start and be slightly early for them

I have made a thread for grizedale applicants for 13/14 have a look, its the most popular on tsr and irl and i have already met a couple of ppl i can call friends and makes me look forwards to uni even more.

It depends on what you're looking for as each college offers something different. I've applied to Furness because it's the smallest, it's close to most places on campus and it has a 15 hour bar crawl twice a year, all of which suit me. Other people go for different things, for example they might choose Grizedale or County so that they might be able to live in a townhouse, or they might choose Fylde because it's the "sporty" college. It's worth seeing which kinds of accommodation each college offers and where everything is in relation to the campus so that you can make up your mind. Most colleges seem pretty good though

I never went to a GZ hog roast in my three years as an undergrad. They weren't, to my knowledge, well advertised - never seem to hear about it in the many emails the college administrators sent me. I do, however, go to the one in town quite frequently: there's a guy on the market every wednesday and saturday. £3.50 for bap, lots of meat, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling (if you want it)

I’m going to be biased because I love Grizedale, but it seriously is the best college on campus!
I take Biology and Chemistry and it’s a 4 minute walk to the Biology lecture theatre for starters, where most 1st year biomedical lectures take place. It’s also a 5 minute walk to alex square, and is a 2 minute walk to a Chinese restaurant, Central supermarket, Wib Wobs burger Bar and the management school.
Accommodation and Bar is all pretty much brand new. Really modern, great quality and nice. Townhouses are the most social, then probably standard, ensuite can be good, but a lot of international students opt for ensuite, which can lead them to being a bit quieter. I lived in a townhouse in my first year and made 11 great friends, several of whom I’ve remained very close with.
I’ve helped to organise freshers week this year and I can promise you it’s going to be epic! Got loads of great things planned.. there will be a free hog roast on the first night, The college staff organise one every year

Completely disagree with the comments about Cartmel College (obviously, aha)
The "long" walk to the middle of campus is in reality about 10 minutes. Longer than colleges that are already placed in the middle of campus, yes. Yet what this particular student seems to forget is that Lonsdale is right next to Cartmel, which would mean that this "long" walk applies to them also. The same can be said for 'Posh' Pendle, the superior en-suites for Grizedale and the colleges that offer Studios, as all of these in question are in Alexandra Park (known as South West campus).
County is also on the complete opposite end of campus, meaning that to get to the centre of campus, this walk would be equally as "long".
Also, this year, each college has approximately a 35% population of international students. Therefore, the claim that Cartmel is a "dumping ground" is completely untrue. This is the same in previous years- each college receives approximately the same intake of international students.
As for the college bar and socials- this can be said for the majority of the colleges. This claim was clearly made by someone who doesn't regularly attend the majority of socials that colleges put on- each college struggles with attendance. And I can say that with good authority- seeing as we regularly go to other colleges socials, and have good connections with the other colleges.
That being said, your time at Lancaster University is a reflection of the effort that you put into it. If you go out with a positive attitude, you will have a good time.
The 'reputations' of each college are not true in the slightest- Some colleges may attempt to claim the 'party college' name for example, with each college failing to prove it. I have friends in every college who complain about international students, the socials, their own bar, as well as the type of people they are surrounded by.
You will have a good mix of all kinds of different people and experiences, no matter what college you choose.
Don't let a single opinion tar any colleges image in your own mind. You will have an excellent time what ever college you happen to be in

There wasn't one at my freshers week (three years ago)...though now that you mention extrav I think there may have been one in my first year's extrav.
Still, twice a year is a lot less than twice a week, which is what you get in town.
I'm in Pendle College and am happy with my choice. That could be because I'm not a massive party-goer so I don't mind any lack of events. The bar has been described as an old strip club. It's not the most comfortable bar and is the only one not serving food now. However, the exec are putting more effort into planning nights out. They have Pendle Live, quizzes, etc. It's not in the centre of campus but it isn't a huge walk really. It's close to the shops, Grizedale bar, the Wibbly Wobbley bar, etc. You get a choice of different rooms - share bathroom or en-suites. I live in en-suite which is relatively modern. It's a good size and as it's not stuck in the middle of campus you can get lovely views from your window. Pendle attracts many international students, which is nice as you get to meet all kinds of new people to share experiences with. Last year two of my flatmates were exchange students - one from Austria and the other from France.

Hello! First, I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your helpful and informative review of Grizedale. Second, I was wondering if you could recommend a college for someone like me as I am having trouble discerning what would be a great fit based on varying reputation reports. I am an international student hailing from Houston,Texas,USA, not to big on parties or drinking (hoping to do a bit more socializing post-school hours or theatre practice in college but am not to keen on drinking until I'm 21 - the legal drinking age in US), kind of an introvert until I get to know someone then I'm more extroverted, not a "hyper person" in terms of excitability factor, not into playing sports nor do I currently participate in one but I am willing to watch the occasional football match (mostly the SuperBowl), love books both classic and scyfy, and would love a college to help me work on coming out of my comfort zone. I'm not to picky in terms of ensuite or shared but a college accommodation closest to the Business school, as I plan to enter as a Marketing major, would be ideal. Thanks for any help you are able to provide me!~ Coco

Hi Mitosis,
I'm a proud Furnessian so Furness is best but in all seriousness the things i would think about most are location (whether you want somewhere more central or a bit more like a separate village), accommodation options (ensuite, standard or townhouse) and then consider the atmosphere of the college. Most colleges are quite similar and you get out of them as much as you put in - if you get involved you'll make lots of friends and have a great time.

All colleges have people like that, and a lot of what makes a college best for you is what you hope to get out of it. Each college doesn't have a particular kind of person, and that's what I think it beautiful about the collegiate system, as it's a group of different people who come together with the primary common factor of their college and become friends. You'll find that, a lot of the time, meeting people with more specific common interests generally happens as a result of becoming part of particular societies - although, I have met some of my closest and most like-minded friends in my college!
For me, in Furness, I love the close-knit community feeling due to it being the smallest of the colleges. I can't really speak from personal experience about the other colleges, but from what I've heard from friends in other colleges there's certainly a bit less of a 'family' feel to some colleges than others. Cartmel has a reputation for being where a lot of students who want to be away from the main buzz of campus go, as it's on the slightly separate south-west part of campus called Alexandra Park (also there are Lonsdale and the ensuite block of Pendle), although there will still be students in that college who are more than happy to party into the night or get more involved with university life.
With regards to the non-drinking, you'll find all sorts of friends who respect that or agree with not drinking. I've found that there's not as much pressure to drink at uni as one may think, despite it generally making up a large portion of university 'culture'.
Whilst you plan on studying Marketing (so having your course based in LUMS), know that lectures aren't always situated in your department. For example, Sociology may have lectures in one of the Management School lecture theatres. It's also worth noting that Lancaster's campus isn't overly massive, so no matter which college you choose, you won't really be more than a 10/15 minute walk from anywhere - though many who live in Alexandra Park (Cartmel/Lonsdale/Pendle ensuite) do have a tendency to complain about the walk from their accommodation...

Hi ive got and offer for biomedical sciences and i put grizedale superior ensuite as my first choice and furness superior ensuite as my second. I was wondering where are these rooms located on the campus map? Like are all grizedale rooms on the main campus or not?

Yep, all accommodation is on main campus apart from all Cartmel, Lonsdale and Grad Colleges, as well as Pendle ensuite - these are all in Alexandra Park, which is the additional part of campus at the south.

If you look at the map at the link above, all Grizedale accommodation is the small blocks in the area where number '58' is, and '57' is the main college building which has the college bar, junior common room, and college offices. You'll find that LUSU Central (one of the convenience shops on campus), is also part of that building, so it's handily placed for buying small bits and pieces.
