EXACTLYYY,

people aren't understanding that it's not the fear of spiders hurting them, it's actually their presence and the thought of a spider being their and potentially touching their hairy butters little ugly skin on your face......... EUGHGHSDFGHSGDSDF I HATE THEM SO MUCH.

I would advice you sleep in another room until you find the spiders because you will meet the spider again!! and this is a good thing as you can kill it/destroy it/ set fire to it or torture it, good for nothing piece of s**t and then you can sleep a nice sleep (after you change your sheets of course)

Arachnophobia is NOT an irrational fear. We are programmed to be scared of spiders because of natural selection. As we were evolving the people who weren't afraid of of spiders were killed by them. The people who avoided them survived and passed on the gene of being scared of them, so it became more frequent.

This is a massive cliche but it's true: it's probably more scared of you than you are of it

I witnessed a pretty sizable eight-legged friend around my room last night, went to get them with the glass and when I came back it was gone. It could be anywhere. I was an arachnophonbe for years and am still overcoming the fear. But I thought, what's the worst that could happen?

I'm assuming you live in UK? In which case, you can relax. We have no venomous spiders here and to be honest, what we call big is laughable. (Look up trapdoor spider if you don't believe me, at your own peril :P)

Most critters are harmless until provoked, they just want somewhere to live while it's too hot, cold, dry or wet outside. Leave it be, it'll probably be gone by now

I hope this can help, just wanted to say you're not alone but there's nothing to be afraid of :hugs:

It's a common misconception that we don't have venomous spiders in the UK actually, but if you don't live in the South you're probably fine - just putting it out there

This is the cutest critter I have ever found... how can anyone be afraid of something so awesome? I want one.

I think I just pooed myself.
I had exactly the same problem! The spider was on top of the ceiling above my bed absolutely massive but thankfully I had bought this bug killing spray a few days earlier. Since its the summer and a lot of bugs are crawling around I thought I would give it a go. And it was amazing one spray and the spider just died. Plus according to the spray I'm using once you spray it on a specific area any bugs that come in that same area again will die as well (works up to 4 weeks apparently). Its defiantly helped get rid of most of the bugs around the house since I haven't noticed many if not any in the past week.

If you're still scared of the spider being under your bed, just hoover under your bed and around it, so if it was still their, you'll probably have gotten it or at least any web it may have spun

You know you eat like loads of flies and bugs when you're asleep without knowing?
Spiders aren't that stupid, they don't go near sleeping humans because they're not interested.
Don't see why you're complaining, that little fella's probably getting rid of any insects what attempt to get into your house.
Relax, think of it as your knight in shining armor

This.

And - this sounds mental - but what you could try is naming the spider. Then it might not be as scary. I read about a girl who had severe arachnophobia, and her mum used to get her to name the spiders she saw, so she wouldn't be frightened of them.

On another note - your bedroom will be too hot for a spider - while you were in your sister's room it will have made its way back outside, so don't worry. Anyone here trying to freak you out with the mouth thing is an idiot - spiders don't go for human mouths - why would they? Spiders are driven by the need to eat, and humans are FAR too big to be prey!

Hahaha, hairy butters like ugly skin

I've never actually killed a spider though! And a part of that is because I worry that if I kill one spider, I'll get bad karma and will experience an even worse encounter with one or more spiders in return. So I stay on their good side and get someone to safely remove them for me!

Thank your stars that it's eating all the horrible flies for you.

I'd rather have flies than the excrement they clear away.

Do you have excrement lying around your house?
When I read the title to this thread I didn't want to click on it since I'm about to go to bed and didn't want to scare myself which some scary story or something (don't know what I was expecting really). Got the guts to have a read and I was relieved that it wasn't as scary as I was imagining. And to be honest I would freak out if something like that happened to me. Probably stare at the spider like its gonna kill me and then shout to my dad/mum to get rid of it. But like someone said above I think if its affecting you to get to sleep maybe get a spray or a net around your bed which should keep the spider away.

That's not even a little bit true. While I'm not arachnophobic myself, I can say that there is an evolutionary basis to arachnophobia. The theory surrounds our ancestors being bitten and killed my certain poisonous spiders. Those who learned to avoid the spiders by fleeing were more likely to survive, and thus arachnophobia would become an advantageous trait. Nothing irrational about it.

Now something like Anatidaephobia...that is irrational.

It is rational in that sense. I guess what I was referring to is that you can't rationalise it. Knowing they can't harm you makes no difference. It's not about safety, it's such a deep rooted fear that really has no place in our country, it's illogical. And I'd say that it is more debilitating than advantageous in this day and age.

If only I could replace house spiders with house snakes, that I would much prefer!

I was referring to the earth in general. Flies get into houses all the time but spiders will stop many getting out again to clear away all of the crap, hopefully mainly bestial, in wider society. I'd rather have them than not. Besides, they are fairly easy to usher out with open windows, closed doors and darkness to want them to be eliminated before they have a chance to do so and get back to performing a valuable earthly service.

I guess it's worth a try in future! Ooh is that true that it's too hot inside? That would be marvellous.

It reminded me of one of those sootballs from Spirited Away if you've seen it (only not as cute) so quite big!

They're noisy and annoying, and I like spiders anyway. There's millions of flies knocking around outside with other places to live, so if there's a few spiders in my room to keep it clear of them then I'm happy.

It is indeed true. Spiders like to be cool - that's why you'l generally find them in dark corners or in the bathroom, as those places tend to be cooler. Even those places are too hot in this kind of weather, so they'll mosey on outside, and nap in a crack in the pavement, or under a rock or something. Don't worry OP- more than 24 hours later your spider will be LONG gone.
