The Cambridge 2013 Results Day Discussion Thread

I had exactly this at the STEP Easter School; multiple people randomly coming up to me and saying "You're DJMayes, right? From TSR?". Someone even named their team (in a big quiz, 16 teams) after me!

People do have a very funny interpretation of things though. Someone on this forum (I do not know who) was asking people who went to the STEP school about my appearance in real life; on the internet I am apparently envisaged as "6 foot tall and muscular"...

That's hilarious!

No one seems to expect me to be blonde.

Actual quote from the evening: "We're going to read the team names out from last place to first place. So, to start us off, in 16th place, we have... (funny look from the person reading) ... Second to [My name here]?".

I don't really think about hair colours too much. I am blonde also. The most annoying thing about it is the idea currently being perpetuated that I have no eyebrows, simply because they're very light...

Lots of swimming training, far too much TV (hence I've watched sooo much swimming), visited my Grandma in Essex with my girlfriend and spent far too long writing an application for a bursary that I am never going to get... Not overly productive, but seems to be enough for now






It's a very entertaining moment when two people who vaguely know of each other from TSR bump into each other (as I did with Alex Bampton) Will be more so if your reputation builds up a mental picture completely different to the way you look...

You two both have obscure screen names (or even stranger real names), so I imagine that you will be fine. I myself tend to give far too much away (such as my first name) when trying to get on with people so any determined stalker will track me down pretty quickly...

Haha I can also attempt to pretend to be Norwegian...until a real Norwegian turns up and calls me an idiot.

Is there anything bad about being recognised from TSR despite perhaps the potential embarrassment (which doesn't really apply for Cambridge because >90% of the year will probably be quite into whatever subject they are studying)?

I must say I don't envy DJ though

I'm definitely not going by Llewellyn next year no matter where I end up. Too many pronunciation issues. Although anyone who can be bothered could probably work it out without much difficulty.

I was referring to recognising me from TSR - although that wasn't at all clear.

I cba to explain it properly. "ll" in Welsh doesn't have an English equivalent. The closest may be "chl". My first name is easy to pronounce though, so it will be easy to just go with that.

To be fair I have spent 6 hours today watching TV, so I have no excuse.

I have been doing bits of Maths over the summer but probably nothing as substantial as a lot of other people. I need materials for good things to learn at this level, as otherwise I end up diving in way over my head.

What, MagicMan? No, it was another applicant for this year who wasn't on the STEP school. Right college though.

Someone (I don't know if it was the same person) also logged in under LotF's name, and told the online lecturer their voice turned him on. It was funny because you could hear him start to stutter and get very flustered when he read it...

Also, I read you decided to do Additional Further this year! How'd it go? Which modules did you go for?

(Sorry, I'm not good at this socialising thing and tend to steer conversations towards Maths out of habit. )

Honestly it wasn't that bad. I was mostly surprised I had apparently made such an impression although I think that it was half fame and half infamy (as a certain other TSR user who wasn't on the STEP school logged into one of the online lectures pretending to be and saying things like "Contour integration over a Banach space reduces this problem to something trivial") which meant I also had to explain to several other people that I wasn't actually the one trolling the lecture.

Yeah, I only did FP3,4 and M3, but found them interesting enough. Thought they went well. Cuh didn't mention the Geology though, eh! Far more interesting Nae problem maths is awesome, especially that which has an application to physics.
