Do opposite personalities attract?

To clarify, I mean opposite personality types: for example, I am quite forward and sociable, and I often find myself attracted to guys who are more laid-back and introverted.

Do you think people tend to be attracted to those with different personalities, who probably bring out a different side to them? Or is it more of a turn off, because they're less likely to have shared values/interests?

I'm somewhat laid back and introverted, I like it when people are somewhat similar, however by introverted I mean within social groups, not always pushing to be center of attention etc, people that just sit at home bore me, you've gotta like human company.
I think they do in a way - I've always been attracted to more outgoing girls because I'm reasonably laid back but I also like when they are motivated to do fun things /share similar interests with me guess you can't have it all though

I can't imagine being in a successful relationship with someone who was the complete opposite to me.

Obviously nobody is exactly the same and there are some factors that you and your partner are bound to disagree on and there'll be differences between you but how can you connect with someone and get on with them if you have absolutely nothing in common? What would you talk about?
It's hard to say, really. My boyfriend and I are opposites in terms of the fact that I'm very shy and introverted and he's far more sociable and outgoing, I was very good at school and got very good grades, whereas he was the loveable troublemaker who kind of skated through exams. So we're opposites there. But in terms of our sense of humour, our likes and dislikes, our beliefs and backgrounds, the way we were raised, we're very similar. So I think the ideal really is for two people to be similar enough to get along, but different enough to make it interesting

I voted no, purely because I couldn't imagine being with someone who was the opposite of me. There's no way it would work. They would find me SO boring :teehee:

You could try taking up new hobbies? Not to impress new partners necessarily, but even if you're more of an introvert doing new stuff can be fun

Maybe you're just stuck in a rut?

You don't have to socialise to take up a hobby... do drawing or read books or join the gym or something? :s-smilie:

I wouldn't say it doesn't matter per se, but I have definitely been attracted to guys who are like me and unlike me. The guy I like at the moment is the polar opposite of me, and we get on really well together - there's definitely something there. I'd say it's a turn on. But it varies from person to person.

No sex before marriage

He can decide whether abortions can be carried out

What about gay relationships? What rules must we follow?

Are you high? (Or religious?)
In an ideal world I'd like to date someone strong-minded and willed, dominant and confident. While those are opposite qualities to my own, I wouldn't say "opposites attract": more so, "you deep down want to date someone with qualities you wish you had".

Yes, absolutely. It's as true as feminine attracts masculine. Looking at all the successful, long term couples I know there is such a balance. Masculine - feminine, passive - active, extroverted - introverted, adventurous - home-oriented, analytical - intuitive etc.

There is a saying "birds of a feather..:" but I think that is regarding background and values. You're more likely to hit it off with someone of similar socio-economic background, similar religion (if you have one), political beliefs etc.

So for me the right guy is masculine, extroverted, ambitious, active, analytical, not very emotional and is of a similar background to mine, educated, either Christian or agnostic and conservative.

This holds true with every guy I've been attracted to who's also been attracted to me - even if I don't know any of these things, the immadiate attraction we feel is a result of polarity between us. That polarity is necessary not just to fall in love, but to have sexual attraction and keep that attraction. I see some people with very similar partners to themselves, but their relationships are always more friendship-based than they are passionate.
To an extent. You want someone thats a bit different to you but you're not going to like someone that is the complete opposite of everything about you.

I'm somewhat introverted and I've only been really attracted to outgoing and bubbly girls so it rings true for me.
