Moderated from A to U --- help!

I'm in year 12, did Music A level a year early and got my results yesterday - B overall, which is what I expected, and I was happy.
Then I looked at my modular grades, and my performance module (which is marked in school as coursework and moderated by the exam board) was graded at U. I spoke to the other two people in my class, and it turns out they got U for the same module. When my teacher marked it, she gave me a high A. Can results change that much from moderation? If I had received the mark she gave me, my overall grade for my A level would be an A. This is so frustrating!
I'm applying to Oxford, so I have to submit my UCAS application by the 15th October - this means I'm highly unlikely to get a remark back in time to be able to include it in my application.

Is there anything I can do that will be quicker?
Has anyone else had a similar issue?

I was really pleased with all my other grades, and this is kind of spoiling it... :frown:

Thanks

As this is centre marked and externally moderated you cannot get a re-mark by yourself. The only option is for the whole centre's work to be re-moderated, I suggest you talk to your school asap and find out what happened. Re-moderation tends to take longer than a remark (they are normally back within 10-14 days).

With a difference in mark this great it would seem that there is more to it than just moderation. Candidates can lose marks if the specification hasn't been followed- e.g. if a performance is meant to be 15 minutes and you only play for 8 then there will be a penalty - say 1 mark every 30 seconds - and that can drop your grade significantly.
Also be aware that if you didn't play pieces Grade 5 standard and above in the practical they will take marks off you.

What exam board was this?

I'm not a Music specialist but from my experience you need to be a confident Grade 8 to get an A in the performance unit - and I have seen people with Grade 8 get Cs.

I did WJEC and we were told Grade 5 standard pieces were the absolute minimum. I played three pieces on the LRSM specification and got full marks in the performing module, so it's not impossible. OP, I'd seriously suggest asking for a priority remark, even if it means everyone else's is moderated. If you're lucky the school may pay for it (I know my school has done this in the past, although not for music and not for WJEC.)

Re-marks are not an option for centre marked coursework. The candidate cannot chose for it to happen - the school has to decide to pay for it to be re-moderated - the cost varies between exam boards but at Edexcel the minimum price is £150 for a centre entry of 5 candidates.
I know this isn't the same, however I didn't get the grade I was expecting in Art, and I'm thinking that the moderator has also docked marks. All throughout my A2 year whenever I I handed work in it was graded as an A.
For Art, the only re-mark/re-moderation option is for a whole centre and it's £300+. I've emailed my Art teacher to find out what's happened.
I hope you find out what's happened in your instance, OP, and you get the grade that you deserve.

Ah, I didn't know that.

The performance was meant to have been between 12 and 15 minutes and mine was either 13 or 14 minutes, I can't remember exactly, but I was definitely within the time.

I spoke to my teacher and she said she was going to ask for a remark/ remoderation, but she said she doubted it would change the grade much because apparently that looks bad on the exam board?

It was Edexcel.
The minimum grade was grade 6 for A2, and I played three pieces - two grade 7 and one grade 8.

For our specification, the minimum requirement was grade 6 and it's perfectly possible to get full marks by playing grade six pieces, but they have to be absolutely immaculate. If you play higher level pieces, "multipliers" are applied to your mark so you are given credit for trying harder music.
I resat my AS performance module this year and my grade stayed very similar with moderation - my teacher gave me 88 UMS and my final mark was 82, so still within the same grade. For my A2 performance, I dropped from 83 UMS right down to 32.

I had a similar problem but just with AS music two years ago...I was expecting an A in performance and the external examiner marked me at a C, which brought me down to a B overall. The same happened to the others in my class - they got a few grades lower than expected - C, E and U.
My school applied to get this re-moderated and checked but they didn't change.

We all resat the performance module in year 13, and with the same examiner (!) got an A. I probably did perform a bit better, perhaps with a better choice of pieces, but it was a substantial improvement. I didn't do A2 music though.

I entered the performance module for June 2011 on my UCAS form (so entered it twice) with result pending, to let the universities know that I was resitting - but it was obvious there was something up with it compared with my other module results.
But one iffy module result shouldn't matter too much - depending on what you're applying for (I'm a medic, so music wasn't the most relevant) and it didn't have any impact on my offers - I still managed to get into Cambridge

Hope this helps somewhat - but talk to your music teachers and school about what to do, but I think the others are right and you can't apply for a remark individually. There may be variations in exam board though...

I've asked my teacher and she said I won't have to pay, but she seems to think she can send individuals off for remarks...
I'm not allowed to get priority though, my school only offers them to year thirteen :/

My music (composition) coursework was moderated from an A to a E (school staff have no idea what they're doing)
I just did it again next year. :P

If you say you were expecting a B and received a U for one module - I should inform you this is rare but it is not the first time that it has happened that the examiner has made a huge error.

There was a straight A student in my physics class who literally got straight A's in everything. One A2 module came back as a U - it was a shock, but he knew it was not possible so he had the paper remarked and it came back as an A. Can you believe it!

That happened to my composition last year - I got a D and then remarked as a lower D, and I resat that this year and got a high B. I also resat my performance last year to get a few extra UMS so I'd be in with a chance of an A.
I don't need to resit any modules from any of my other subjects, but I feel as though resitting half of my A level is a bit much... I am happy with my B, so if a remark doesn't help, I won't mind so much, it's just frustrating knowing it COULD have been better, maybe if I had just had a different examiner!

This is my point, it's so subjective in this module - if an examiner is marking scripts they're going to judge similar answers to be similar grades because they're marking the exact same questions for every student but because you can literally go into an A-level practical exam and play anything above Grade 6 (which is probably in the millions of pieces, considering there's lots of instruments) there doesn't seem to be any consistency - coupled with the fact the examiner can either be really nice and give everyone As or be really horrible and take marks off for every mistake, every wrong note, etc, it's certainly not an ideal situation.

Hey! I am hoping to apply to medicine at Cambridge and got a B at Music AS level, I got a D in the compositional module (inconsistent AQA marking again). Did your C hinder you at all, or did they ask you about it?

Thank you!!

I am also hoping to apply to Cambridge. I did AQA music, and got an A in both the performance and aural/essay modules, but an E for composition! This brought my over all ums down to 232 -- 8 marks off an A! I did task A (four part + controlling texture) and my teachers had given it the all clear, so an E was a total shock! I'm hoping for a remark... :/
