FRESHER'S WEEK 2013 - Canterbury

FRESHER'S WEEK, 2013
No doubt that for many of you reading this, you'll be wondering what the heck goes on during Fresher's Week?! Well, that's what this post is dedicated to. The first lot of information is primarlily focused on the evening/night stuff. I'll mention daytime events in later posts and this will be updated with better info closer to the time. Unfortunately, I know nothing about the Medway campus - if anyone knows about anything and wants to contribute, PM or quote me.

Fresher's Week this year at UKC is from Saturday the 21st Sept (1st moving in day) to Sunday the 29th. It is just the one week and not a fortnight - CCCU has a fresher's fortnight, hence any confusion - this starts the week before UKC. Also, the week is officially referred to as Welcome Week by the University/Union but is a term rarely used by the student population itself

For starters, this link is the official FB page for Kent Fresher's, this year. It will be my main source of info., and should be yours too. This will be one of the first places events will be announced. In addition, it'd be worth noting this event, run by Soap on the first day of the week at The Venue. Lastly, for all the stuff going on town, this is arguably the most useful link, provided by Student Republic. All other links can be found in the Guide to Canterbury's Nightlife thread.

Finally a disclaimer that is not an official guide as has been compiled by myself based on information that has been released from the Union and the university. Any opinions are my own. It is not (yet) endorsed by the University of Kent or Kent Union.

Campus
In this part, I'll mention mainly what's going on at The Venue across the week, and after that, I'll go through what has been planned at the college bars/planned by the college student committees! I am getting my info. from the Kent Union website, which has put the Freshers Week info up. It syays on the website that there will soon be an actual planner to download soon too. When you move in, you can get this in poster form free, from the Welcome Week Helpers. :yy: Lastly, I will discuss the Kentertainment Pass at the end of this.

The Venue
I'm pleased to tell you that I can now update as to what is going on at the Venue over Fresher's week - thanks to the user APersonCalledClara for providing me with those. I'll try and give a little rundown on what these are, but event info is quite sparse at the moment. Where I've put 'Event Created,' go to the relevant FB page to find that, you can find links to these earlier in this guide.

Saturday 21st - 'Soap' Hall Wars

Poster

Ok, so the first event of the week is on the first moving in day. Traditionally quite a quiet night Freshers-wise as not everybody has moved in yet and not everybody is keen to go out clubbing on the first night. As you can see, it's run by Soap, one of the event brands at the Venue. In my experience, they've been pretty decent nights! As you can also see it's a neon night and yes that does mean neon paint. Don't fear though, the stuff they use is clothing friendly, though probably best not wear your whitest whites, or that brand new skirt. :p: The idea is turn up in your college colours (see the poster for details) and get messy :p:
(Event Created - see the Soap and The Venue page)

Sunday 22nd - Freshbook Welcome Party

Poster

This has the potential to be busy - those who came on the Saturday may now be willing to venture out and the vast majority of freshers are moved in. The idea behind this is that you buy a T-shirt on the night and write info. about yourself on it - much like Facebook and all that. A bit gimmicky but it can stop you asking the "oh, what are you studying?" question a million times in one night.
(Event Created - See the Venue page)

Monday 23rd - 'Press Play'

Poster

Advertised as an RnB, HipHop, Dance and Afro Beats night. Naturally a night for people with taste in that style of music but otherwise it looks like it'll be a fairly plain night without any gimmick. As I say, if you're into that then go for it. If not, then have a look at other nights on offer.
(Event created - see the Venue page)

Tuesday 24th - Rendevouz - International Students Welcome Party

Poster

Does it what it says on the tin, a night catered to international students and plenty will be encouraged to turn up. If all the different nationalities turn up it will be very diverse indeed, which is pretty cool. Music from across the world is played too.
(Event Created - See the Venue page)

Wednesday 25th - 'Jelli Baby' Skool Disco

Poster

A favourite of the week, the school disco is bound to be a popular night. Everyone dons a shirt and their school tie (well, you won't be needing it again..) and partys away to cheesy tunes and throwback songs. Definitely a fun night. It's worth noting that this event is run by an events brand - Jelli Baby. I don't have any info. on them and they appear to be new at the Venue. It seems they'll be taking over flirt! on Wednesday nights. That will also be interesting to follow.
(Event Created - See the Venue page)

Thursday 26th - #Trend

Poster

This night is most similar to Monday night with the exception that the style of music being pumped out is House and Electronic Dance. Again, no gimmick with this with the exception that they have a Twitter livescreen... which could be interesting. What is interesting is that a) this is night run by Student Republic and b) it will continue to be a night every Friday after Fresher's Week. I assume that means it's being held at the Venue each week - meaning the Venue will be open 3 nights a week at least - contrary to what I said in my guide to Canterbury's nightlife.
(Event Created - See the Venue page)

Friday 27th - Soap Fresher's Foam Party

Poster

As you can see it's run by Soap - probably the only time they will be there on a Friday. They were also responsible for bringing foam parties to the Venue, so they know what they're doing  Personally, I wouldn't say the Venue is well built for a foam party but ho hum. If you're short make sure you know where people are/know how to get out - some people can feel quite claustrophobic. Of course, there's no terrible danger, just at the time it can make people feel uneasy. Despite all that, people will still say it's one of the best nights they've been too. The pros outweigh the cons on this one.
(Event Created - See the Venue page)

Saturday 28th - MTV Freshers Ball

Poster

Easily the biggest night of Freshers week and without a doubt the place to be on the last partying day of Freshers. The website doesn't give much info yet but will do soon. The Facebook event page has limied info bu based on that it's going to a big one. The first clue is in the name - MTV are going to be there and (presumably) filming away. That will also explain how they've managed to get a hold host of names to perform there. It appears there are two stages, one is a normal one, headlined by Ms Dynamite (blimey, that's a blast to the past) and the other stage looks like it's catered to all you ravers out there. The Venue isn't the biggest of clubs, so it looks like they're also extending it out by making an outdoor area too - likely to be in the plaza area outside the Venue. They also say thay have a casino set up too, so it's going to be rammed and popular! There are limited tickets and these are bought on the Union website, when the links come up.
Based on previous years, the ball is an event for Fresher's only - we shall have to wait and see if that is the case this time round. In my opinion it's well worth going to and a good way to get to know housemates/people you've come across during the week. :yep: It's also a great excuse to dress up smart and wear that outfit you've bought specially for the week

Campus Bars/College Commitee Organised Nights
Ok then, so below you will find a table of events for the evening activities across all the bars on campus. The vast majority of these have been organised by the college student committees and the vast majority will be run in that college bar. The only exception to this is Rutherford, as it no longer has a bar - you will know nearer the time where those events are held.

Most of these are pretty self-explanatory so I'm not going into them in detail - I've made an exception for the more noteworthy nights and these have been given a superscript label which correspond to the notes below the table. For those that are neither self-explanatory/explained by me then they're just as mysterious to me as they are to you. :iiam:

Lastly, NOTE: You are assigned a college based on where you live. If you are in Parkwood, you are randomly assigned a college. In practical terms college membership is pretty useless as it has no bearing across life at the universites and all college buildings are welcome of students, regardless of allegiance. The only way college membership comes into play is if you have any form of issue with other people in your accommodation, at which point you report to the college master. Therefore, this means that you can attend any of the nights listed below that you wish/that takes your fancy. However, your college committees (in the form of Welcome Helpers) will likely persuade you to go to their night.

Campus By Night
This is quite simply an evening tour of all the campus bars and this is run by the Welcome Helpers/college committee. On the day, the helpers will provide you with initial location and start time. Traditonally, the tour ends at the Venue.

2.

Ruby Tuesdays
This will be an ideal introduction to Origins' flagship night, held every Tuesday - see the Nightlife thread for more info.

3.

Massive Mungo's
Held in Mungo's obviously. There are more notes in the Nightlife thread on this. Easily one of the most fun nights in Fresher's and the best part is that it's free and drinks are cheap!

4.

Magic Mungo's
This will be an ideal introduction to Mungo's flagship night, held every Friday - see the Nightlife thread for more info.

The Kentertainment Pass - Is It Worth It? - SOLD OUT

Right, well first of all what is the Kentertainment Pass and what does it get you? Quite simply, for £30 you will get:

Free entry to Hall Wars on the Saturday

Free entry to Freshbook on the Sunday, as well as Freshbook t-shirt for free.

A ticket to the Fresher's ball (worth £22 if bought separately)

Queue Jump to Venue events all week

50% off to Venue all week.

all in the form of a wristband.

First things first, this pass is an awful lot cheaper than previous years and especially considering the Freshers Ball is more expensive than previous years, that's a pretty good deal. Reasons why many would put off the Pass in previous years is because they simply didn't go to the Venue every night of the week and well, why would you?! Naturally, you'll be wanting to explore other bars on campus and maybe in town. For getting a pass this year, I would say it's going to hinge on whether you go the Freshers Ball or not at the end of the week. Considering the Pass includes your £22 worth of ticket, that means you only need to make £8 of savings over the rest of the week to recoup your money. Importantly, if you don't go the Ball (and not everybody does - tickets are limited) then it would not be worth getting the Pass - you simply won't make £30 worth of savings (unless you go each night..).

Now let's say you are going to the ball - well, as I say, you have £8 worth of savings to make over the other 5 or 6 nights. Also consider that entry costs around £5 or £6 during the week without the pass (not that I can find info. about this at the moment..). With the pass though, you'd only be paying £3 and on the first weekend - when most of you should be moved in - it'll be free. Also note that with a lot of people having the pass, the queue jump will almost seem pointless as you'll still be queuing for an age. In my opinion, the most savings can be made on the Freshbook night (Sunday). Yu'll have a free entry otherwise costing ~£5 and a free t-shirt costing anything between £2-£5.. so that's £8 of savings in one night. You could do Freshbook and the Ball and not go the Venue again. You could do both free nights and the Ball and save your money. You could go to the Ball and go to three midweek events for half price and recoup your money. There are plenty of options there and it all seems rather hunky-dory.

Hold your horses though because as good as this sounds to the individual - consider those you've just moved in with - and likely the first lot of people you'll go to the Venue with. If a couple of you have a Pass and the others don't - is it going to be worth leaving them all behind in the regular queue, whilst you queue jump? If they don't have a Pass, they may not want to go to Freshbook (or wherever) at all - meaning you won't get your free entry/free t-shirt. Who knows, but it is a factor and can be a risky buy :dontknow: I know these problems seem a bit trivial now but they may not at the time.

In the interests of not sitting on the fence, I've surprised myself in that I recommend the Pass - so long as you a) go to the ball and b) make use of one of the opening weekend free events, especially Freshbook. Without either of those, it will probably be a waste of money. Lastly, if you went by this recommendation and it didn't turn out favourably, then remember this all just an opinion!

Important Daytime Events + Misc (Campus)
There's not going to be much to this portion of the post, but some of it is still important nonetheless. I will start by saying though that make sure you know if you have anything scheduled in for Freshers week, such as induction lectures. They may be non-compulsory but they're very important if you want to get yourself orientated. If you haven't received anything about that yet, don't fret, you'll receive info. soon enough. I don't feel the need to give any information of arrivals weekend/moving in, as most of all that can be found on the Kent website - any questions though, feel free to post in here and ask.Right, now that that is out of the way, this post is essentially about the Fresher's Fayres!

The Fresher's Fayres this year are on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th of September. The first is usually a fayre for all the societies and the second event is usually for all the sports clubs. The fayre is held outside the Essentials shop on the plaza, leading around past the Venue and then back into the Eliot college car park. When you go to it though, you won't be able to miss the massive marquees! It's easily one of the most important events during the whole week and it's a good chance for societies to showcase themselves and see what impresses and what doesn't!
There's no commitment to join on the day - any you're interested in, give an email address at their booth and have a chat with those running their stall and pay a small fee for membership at a later date. Some groups will also run taster sessions that are free for a chance to get used to it before a fee has to be paid  In addition to all of that, local (and large) companies will also have booths and stalls to convince you to visit their outlets in your time at Kent. It's well worth visiting these guys too as they have plenty of freebies for you to grab (my best recollection is of Nando's dishing out some cheeky vouchers). Definitely worth going to.

Here's a list of all current Kent societies (some of these may not have a stall at the fayre).

Here's a list of all current Kent sports societies (some of these may not have a stall at the fayre).

Also because I remembered it as I was writing this (and don't know where else to put it) it's worth looking out for the Kent RAG stall (Raise and Give) - they're a society based around charitable stuff - but importantly to a lot of freshers, they sell wristbands which will give drink discounts all freshers week in all campus bars, the discounts aren't bad and you'll make your money back in one night! Discounts are also on non-alcoholic soft drinks too, for those who don't drink.

If I remember anything else, I'll update this as and when.

FRESHER'S WEEK, 2013

No doubt that for many of you reading this, you'll be wondering what the heck goes on during Fresher's Week?! Well, that's what this post is dedicated to. This is in the nightlife thread, so the information in this post is focused primarily on that. Where relevant, I'll mention daytime events - when the time is closer, I may make a seperate thread on daytime stuff/general fresher's week FAQs, however don't press me for that yet as this particular guide has sucked up a lot of my time.

As you can see, this post is comparatively empty - it's still too early to confirm what will be going down in that week. As soon as I know, I'll update this with all you need to know.

Fresher's Week this year at UKC is from Saturday the 21st Sept (1st moving in day) to Sunday the 29th. It is just the one week and not a fortnight - CCCU has a fresher's fortnight, hence any confusion - this starts the week before UKC.

This is merely speculation and not yet confirmed, but going on previous years, expect:

Soap event on the first Saturday night at The Venue (confirmed by the Soap FB event).

A fresher's ball on the second Saturday, purely for the first years at The Venue.

A massive Mungo's in the middle of the week.

Themed nights for most of the week, run by the college committees.

but I'm afraid that's as detailed as I can be right now.

Watch this space.

I'm part of the parkwood student committee and I can tell you that the Venue is planning the following:
Saturday 21st: 'Soap' Hall Wars
Sunday 22nd: Freshbook Welcome Party
Monday 23rd: Urban night
Tuesday 24th: International Welcome night
Wednesday 25th: school disco
Thursday 26th: House music night
Friday 27th: Foam Party
Saturday 28th: MTV Freshers ball

Ah, some nice insider info. :sly: Thanks for this, I'll update my post later on.

Edit: I notice the Venue has created some events. :yy: What with A Level results coming out tomorrow, there may be some more stuff released this weekend for the new freshers.

Good to hear

You'll buy it online from the Kent Union website - I've linked to it in my nightlife thread, or you can find it by Googling 'Kent Union.' I've not yet looked it up so not sure how much it costs, but you don't need to worry about buying it quite yet.

Really this has helped me so much. I now have an idea about the events that will be held during the Fresher's Week. Thanks

Quick question: As for the Neon Wars event, say if I were to get accommodation in Parkwood, the color is orange so will I have to dress up in all orange prior to coming to the event or can I do this at the event with the UV paint? (I'm aware this may sound ignorant but I just needed to ask).

I found it on the Kent Union site and it costs £30, thanks

Excellent! It's also why I've left this thread open so people can ask questions and stuff - remember I'm nobody official, just a student here. I will be updating this with even more stuff soon (like the bar events, the Freshers Fayre for socieites and all this) but it takes time. :colondollar:

Firstly, there's no 'need' to anything! They want people to follow that so that their night looks good  Secondly, by the end of night you'll probably have a ton of neon paint on you so it won't make a difference which colour outfit you're wearing :p: However, the idea is to wear at least something orange (or whatever), but if you don't have anything orange then yeah - get your hands on some orange paint. There are no ignorant questions in this thread either!

£30? Better than the last few years at least! Hmmm. As I say, I will review it later (maybe tomorrow).

Official or not, it doesn't really matter- the information you have put up on here is so very useful and I like, many others, appreciate it so thanks you for taking the time to write this  I can imagine...but thanks

I think I'll need to get that into my head  All right, that clears things up for me, thanks again  I'm glad you don't think so because I felt so ignorant when I typed up that question.

Yes, £30. I'll look forward to the review. Also, this Kent Entertainment pass will be useful only during the Freshers' Week, right?

Thanks for all the help  I'm so excited to join the university
I have but one question for now: looking at the list of events right what the hell is "zombie beach party"? Lol

This neon paint you mention how easily does it wash out? (I tend to only wesr jesns unless its a suit in wearing) so will it was out of denim easily? Or will any clothes I wear that night likely be stained forever? (obviously I wouldnt wear a white tshirt or anything haha that would be stupid )

Sorry for the late reply! So long as you don't get tons of the stuff on you, it'll wash out of things like denim fine. Just wear stuff you don't mind get dirty and can survive a long, hot wash  Don't hold me too much to this though as it's been a while since I last went to one of the neon events. Even if you're a tipsy or drunken state though, make sure your hair/body is clean before jumping into bed - I remember some people ahd a nightmare with that though their bedding (eventually) washed out. :p:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been super-busy with loads of stuff recently and I know I promised things about the Kentertainment Pass, day events in Freshers and now stuff about town events during Freshers is filtering through - I will get that posted and sorry for the delay. I'm a one man operation doing this and it soaks up a lot of my time (that table above for example is a mess of VB code :p: ). I know a lot of people reading this are itching to know about the Kentertainment pass and I will get that done at the very least this weekend.

Thanks for the warning about bedding I honestly never would have thought of that till it was too late lol and I look forward tk the kentertsinment pass value summary/review xD
KENTERTAINMENT PASS section updated. :yy:

Town stuff coming early next week - there's a lot of it to wade through :p:
Well on the note kf the freshers pass-see I was going to get one however looking at the lineup of live music at the freshers ball it doesnt really look like my kind of music so now I'm unsure if I should go or not. Thinking the £30 would be better spent on entry to events I go to. Howeber I was wondering how common would you say it is for people not to go to the freshers ball?

I can't really give much opinion on the Ball - naturally, I only went as a fresher and back then, the Ball was a much smaller affair. I don't know what general consensus is like across different FB pages and all that. If I said, it's not uncommon to not go to the ball, would that be a help? :colondollar: You certainly won't be the only one on campus twiddling your thumbs! If the RockSoc have got their leadership issues sorted for the coming year, then there should be an Alternative Ball on the same night, usually held at Woodys or the Attic (the latter is now closed) - but we shall have to watch this space - if I recall correctly, it's always been free entry (if not, then only a few quid) and they don't play chart/pop rubbish  I don't want to get your hopes up though, as I know RockSoc have had issues sorting that out.
