Thought it made sense to quote you all as you are kind of asking the same questions, and the other information might be useful.
Crimmy you will be in the opposite end of the block to where i was. The rooms, in my opinion, are pretty big. We used to watch films in certain rooms and we would fit about ten or more people into the room, which says it all. The big selling point of 8 is the social side, as you will be living with so many people (the biggest block: 30 on each floor), there is always something happening or somebody who you will have things in common with. I was barely in my room last year except for sleeping/working. (It is also very similar with Block 7 as well)
There is plenty of storage as well and the room is what you make of it. There were some cracking rooms which had been decorated and looked very homely. I do have some photos and i will try and upload them in the next comment
In terms of lectures it is either about fifteen minutes on the bus, ten minutes by bike or thirty minutes by walking. There are regular buses running every ten minutes. I used to bike though as that way i could spend more time in bed in the morning. Early lectures you had to leave earlier for the bus.
As for catered meals. The times are (subject to change):
Monday- Fridays:
Hot breakfast: 7:30-9
Cereals/Toast etc
30-10
Dinner: 5-7
Weekends
Brunch: 12-1
Evening dinner: 5:30-6:30
Not liking the food is a worry for everyone, me included, and you will never know until you try it. I knew i couldn't do better than what was made for us, and despite how low my money was i always knew there was meals there and coming home from a lecture it was nice to know my dinner would be ready. It is also an excellent social point and i am so glad i ended up catered. The food is okay in truth. Some good meals and some good average meals but there is always choices in terms of meats vs veggie options. Then food like chips, peas, beans, veg etc. Plenty of variety to suit everyone.
I hope this helps. I will upload some photographs in a moment. (Sorry for the essay)
