Warwick Freshers 2013 Megathread

Well there's so much going on and then student finance still haven't got back to me and I've got this mahoosive list of things to sort out...oh my word...

I'll be doing Chemistry you?

I haven't even made a list of what I need to do, let alone actually do anything lool

I'll be doing discrete maths

I get stressed easily lol, need to seriously learn to relax
Oh wow what did you put accom wise as your first choice might I ask?

At least by being stressed it means you get things done!

Hmm I really want to join a sport, but there isn't any that I excel at and I'm not very physically fit....hope sports socs don't expect too much from you >.< Other than that I'll definitely be joining the anime society and giving the Go society a go! (pun not intended)

It's a very friendly, relaxed, club that caters for all abilities, so even if you've never picked up a stick before why not give us a go? We also have a vibrant social side, and do most of our training/socials on a Sunday so as not to clash with most other things.

What laptops/ultrabooks are people planning to get? There's just too much choice out there, it's all getting a bit confusing!

I was look at macbooks, but then I keep thinking are they really worth it?!
So, I'm basically in the same boat, can't decide what to get!

Aren't macbooks like £800+?! Really doesn't seem worth it imo, I've been seeing some really good laptops round the £400 mark. I think I want an ultrabook for portability and *think* I've narrowed it down to these 4:

Some good finds!
Assuming it's just for everyday use, out of the four I think I'd go with:

With this you have the older processor (2nd gen, 4th gen just been released) however you won't notice a massive difference with everyday use.
It also has the SSD/HDD combination, this means the laptop will start up in around 10 seconds and be ready for use, a massive plus point I think

Although it has no optical drive, you can buy ones that connect via usb if you wanted to play dvds, so I wouldn't make a decision based on that.

I'm guessing you're happy with 13", so that will help make it more portable. Also Lenovo are known as a good brand for laptops!
Also has the claim of 6-7 hours battery life!

This is very similar to the Lenovo, It doesn't have the SSD so it'll be normal boot up speed . It has the same processor and also hasn't got an optical drive, the only advantage this has over the Lenovo is the screen being bigger, personally I'd stop thinking about this one out of the four.

With this, you have the 15" screen, so a little less portable, but not massively less. The processor is newer and has almost twice the power, but again with everyday use the differences won't be huge. Again no optical drive, and also no SSD, but to be fair the only place the SSD is going to make a difference on the lenovo is the speed of the OS (boot up etc...)

This has an optical drive, something the others doesn't. It has the newer processor but as I said, this isn't massively important. If the claims on battery life are true, 5-6 hours is decent!

Overall (all of this is just my opinion), they all have pretty much the same storage, the Toshiba and Lenovo offer the best battery life with the Lenovo being the most portable. The samsung is the most powerful but the Toshiba is the only one to have an optical drive but as mentioned these can be brought, so out the 4, I'd pick the Lenovo!

We sign up to these clubs at the sports fair right?

You can sign up for clubs at the sports fair if you want to. How it worked last year was that each club had lots of bar code stickers and then you could take these to be scanned along with your uni card and sign up for the clubs like that.

Alternatively, you can sign up at any time online. Most clubs let you try them out for a couple of weeks (Mixed Hockey included) and then you just sign up on line. It's £6 either way I believe

WOW thank you!! I posted in the laptop sub forum with the same thing and no one went in as much detail >.< I didn't know SSD had to do with boot up speed, I'll definitely keep that in mind. That Lenovo model does have pretty mixed reviews though but I'll research some more

So, when will we receive a welcome pack and what does it contain?
