City or Reading? (Econ) - Masters?

I have offers to do Economics at either Reading and City university.

Are the Economics departments considered good at both of these unis? Does either have an edge?

With a solid application and a 2:1 from either one of these universities, would I be able to have a good chance at getting onto an Economics related masters at a top university?

I know many people who have gone to unis such as Brunel and gone on to do a masters at UCL- would either of these unis be okay to do something like that? I believe they are roughly in the same league as each other.

Would going to one give me an advantage over the other for a masters at a top uni?

Reading wouldn't be bad to live in, but I would be excited to live in London, but I feel that City would be a tough university to socialise and meet people, as it has no campus and all the buildings are separate and the halls all seem far away (and very expensive on top of that).

Can anyone give me any advice about this?
I've been thinking since Thursday morning and I can't decide.

A league table for Economics courses, for what its worth, with City above Reading

If you have a 2.1 from these unis you shouldnt have a problem with the Masters. Masters degrees are money making machines for universities and even the top ones will accept you

You also have to ask yourself where you want to work after your Masters.
If its London, then go for City: you'll be able to establish good connections/have internship/relevant work experience in London.

i would go Reading, City doesnt look that nice and its in london, which means its expensive.

I would rather live in Reading, but I also have a family friend that lives near there. City might be better for making connections though. Have you compared the courses?

I think I would be keen on living in London - my original firm was Queen Mary and I didn't get in

I don't know what the atmosphere at City would be like though.. I have a feeling I might have a better student experience at Reading

Does anyone else have any opinions?

Ok I was in the same boat as you for Accounting & Finance courses. I applied to both Reading and City, got offers from both and then had to consider which I wanted. I found a guy who actually left City after one year as he said it had no uni life compared to other universities and after talking to a few others who also said City is quite boring I decided to firm Reading and going in Sept :smile:

Basically CASS is a great department but City overall is poor and living in London is a love/hate thing and you can't know till you do it!

Reading is a campus uni, not the best, but good overall and great lifestyle. I know I love Reading as a town already as I used to live there when I was younger.

Edit: Do you have a particular line of work in mind for after?

No I don't have anything specific in mind for a career after uni, I do plan on doing a masters if things go well though

I am leaning towards Reading I think as I've basically heard the same things as you- I was just worried that City might be considered a better university and I'm not sure how much that will matter long term. I also don't really know what Reading is like, and since City is in London I assume there will always be things to do and I know nearly nothing about Reading

Oh there is loads to do in Reading. I used to live there for a bit, got lots of friends (and so visit it often) and Reading has every shop you could want without feeling like oversized like Londong. Nightlife and social scene is great too and with good transport links to Oxford, Guildford and of course London as well.

To be honest we are comparing apples with bananas here: Reading has a population of 100000 and central london 2 million.
Reading has 17000 students ( rhe size of city) but london has 250000 students. There is nothing wrong with either apple or banana.
If you prefer a close knit friendly campus community go to Reading
If you want to experience what a world city is with dozens of student nights within easy reach every night, go to City.
Career wise City is much more renowned than Reading - a fact to keep in mind if you are considering working abroad or within an international setup
