Biological Sciences 2014 Applicants

Hey, I was just wondering if there are many people thinking of applying for Biological Sciences/Zoology/Animal Behaviour/Marine Biology or any similar courses for 2014? :smile:

Thought we could discuss where we want to apply, for what subject and what careers everyone's interested in :biggrin:

yep,

but im unsure which specific bio degree to do as there are so many
i was thinking most likely human bio/biological sciences as the modules are more human related?

any advice is welcomed, thanks

Heya, I'm applying to Biological sciences! I'm looking at a career in research afterwards, maybe a masters/doctorate too... I'm going to spend my whole life at school, I guess! :tongue:

If Human Bio is your thing, then taking a specialised degree in that area sounds like a good idea. If you'd prefer the option of a bit of variety in your first year, take a straight Biology course - the module options are usually pretty diverse! It's also pretty easy to 'narrow down' if you find your calling. Check the variation between Biological Science modules and Human Bio ones at a few of the universities that interest you - that's how I picked my course ( ^.^ )

I'm not actually at university yet, I've just finished AS year. It's just that I'm pretty set on the style of course I want from each of my choices (Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Durham and York). I'm going for a Biology course because it means I get a broader base for research. The modules vary by university - York, for example, has a wide range of compulsory modules for the first year, from molecular biology to physiology. In the second and third years, you get more choice in the matter - there are loads of optional modules. Really, it varies from place to place, so check out the structure offered by some of the unis you are interested in. Hope I helped a bit!

I'm thinking of applyinh to.Imperial. They're the only ones that do it. What about you?

Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Durham and York - I think! Haven't visited the two 'up north' because of the travel time and cost of b&bs, but I think I'm pretty set ^^ Imperial is amazing! Did you go on one of the open days?

The people there were fab, really lovely :smile:

Plus the accommodation was amazing! Yeah, I'm only a couple of hours from London, too - pretty useful :smile:

I got five A's (Biology, Chemistry, Maths, History and French). How about you, if you're OK with me asking?

I am applying to Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, Aston and Nottingham Trent to study Biological Sciences. I'm applying for MSci at Birmingham and Nottingham as they are my top choices, although when I get my offers I will (hopefully) choose Birmingham as my firm and Nottingham Trent as my backup.

Really looking forward to it, I think the best thing to do if you're unsure is start off with biological science and change or specialise in second or third year as its harder to broaden your horizons than narrow them.

If anyone else is looking at Birmingham then let me know, also went to an open day so can answer any questions. :smile:

I got 3 A's (Biology, Chemistry and Spanish) and a not so amazing E in Maths. I'm hoping that unis will ignore the E or at least I'm hoping that with my other grades, I clearly had a bad day :s-smilie:

But I'm hoping to get predicted at least one A* so... fingers crossed :biggrin:

(I despise Maths with a passion and when I dropped it last year, I thought I'd never have to do it again. Now I have to resit ¬_¬)

Congrats on the As! And good luck for your A*, too :^_^:

Maths is by no means my favourite either - I was in tears after the C2 exam, I thought it had gone so badly... Maths will definitely not be an A* for me next year xD

Exeter, Sheffield, UEA, Oxford Brookes, QUB, I'm starting UEA in little over a month so I can't comment on the step up just yet but I will keep you posted when I can give a better answer :smile:
