Well its obviously not one of my strengths and I'm trying to apply to a school with an interview style that I would be more comfortable with and I would have the greatest chance of getting in.

There's nothing wrong with MMI stations and I actually found it quite enjoyable on the day but obviously perhaps the competition was really high with a really high cutoff and my score was simply not competitive enough. All those rejected post interview aren't all going to make bad doctors, some may have been close to the cutoff but they had to draw the boundary somewhere and some might have been really nervous.

If I have attempted the MMI stations and failed at it, perhaps I perform better using another interview style? I don't know, but I'd rather not risk it.

Thanks for your reply.

I think there's a good chance you would perform much better second time around. Also I think MMI gives you more opportunities to do well - a traditional panel interview can start going badly and then you've blown the whole thing. If your academics are good enough for Birmingham it has one of the highest interview to offer ratios so it would be a shame to discount all MMI unis, as you are going to need to develop those skills anyway.

Yeah the thing is I don't know if I could have done any better. I'm not one of those people who felt they performed crap and then got rejected, I felt I did quite good! I don't know how to improve on how I presented myself so who's to say I could perform better next time round?

Then annoyingly you get those who felt they did crap who then got offers! Life is unfair but I'm not sure I'm well suited to the MMI...

Can't apply to Birmingham anyway, I needed an A* in gcse maths which I only had an A in. Even though I then went to get an A* in the a level. :colonhash:
So hard to pick where to apply!! Does anyone know which universities are completely pbl structured? See on Glasgow's website it says they have lectures and clinical practice as well as pbl but then I have heard from so many people that they are entirely pbl!

I don't know what to do, any advice is appreciated.
I sat my UKCAT yesterday, and got 665. Really disappointed as I got 690 in QR, 720 in AR, 750 in DA and 500 (!!!!) in VR, which dragged it down.
I was hoping to apply to Newcastle, Manchester, HYMS and Leeds, but now I do not know.
My A2's are A*A* (biology and geography) A (chemistry)
GCSES; 8A* 1A.
AS; AAAB
Any suggestions on where to apply? (I applied to Liverpool, Sheffield, Leeds and Cardiff last year with a weak UKCAT of 600. I had interviews at both Liverpool and Cardiff)
I dont know what to do now :frown:

You've got good academics, so you should have lots of choices. See the wiki article on 'applying using your strengths' for ideas on where you'd be a good fit. Good luck!

If those are A2 grades, then I'm afraid there are only four med schools that may consider your application - see the wiki article on 'resit policies' (NB for others - this is about resist after Y13, not resits during Y12/Y13). The med schools that you applied to this year may also consider you under certain circumstances - see the same article. Good luck!

Why not apply to cardiff and liverpool again? If your allowed. You'd probably get an interview at st georges. You'd have a good chance at UAE and Leeds would be dependant on your personal statement quality.

I'm pretty sure Liverpool don't allow it since I was rejected post interview.
Cardiff is a maybe but I'd have to phone up.
St Georges I don't fancy, not looked at UEA, but Leeds is my favourite but seems very hard to get an interview there.
Hey could anyone offer me some advice please. Ive got 780 in my ukcat, A*AA at a level and 5A*6A at GCSE. So far I think I am applying to Queens' Belfast, Glasgow and Newcastle, but I can't decide on the last one i'm . Does anyone have any suggestions? I would prefer a course thats not entirely PBL, just don't think it would suit my learning style! Thanks in advance!!

I didn't fancie St georges either aha.

Well If leeds is your favourite (Same with me) your going to have to smash your personal statment thats what it will come down too. Use there website personal statement criteria to make sure you've covered the points well.

Others which use personal statement bristol/lancaster/keele are good options but Personal statement is subjective so they are risky. There's quite a few others which place partial emphasis on the ukcat which 665 and a good application otherwise will give you a good chance

But I'd say if you applied to cardiff,UEA you'd have good shots their, lancaster has the same admissions policy as liverpool so that may suit you, and Leeds. Your in a strong position.

But do some research and you'll find loads of options.
Hi everyone. Just wanted to know if the medical course at Leeds University is more of the traditional type (with many lectures) or more PBL-oriented. And if it is more of the traditional type, how many lectures per week are there? Are there tutorials as well, and how many per week plz? Thx.

Try not to take what the F1s say too seriously. I agree with that nurse, F1 is one of the worst jobs ever (from what I have seen). Also bear in mind that the F1s now applied in 2006/7 (if my arithmetic is correct), I'm not sure as many (compared to now) will have worked in a hospital for prolonged periods, as say a HCA (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong:smile:), I think their perspective much more often would have come from shadowing a doctor (possibly a reg/consultant) for a week, and maybe doing a befriending scheme a couple of hours a week/volunteering in a care home. I just don't think you get the same perspective from that (not to devalue the great experience though).

I am looking forward to medical school (more the clinical years than my pre-clinical year, I'm looking forward to learning interesting stuff, and doing doctory things without the pressure of being an actual doctor:tongue::wink:) and I'm looking forward to specialty training years (don't know what I want to specialise in though). I am not however looking forward to F1, I'm sure I'll enjoy the responsibility and all that I will learn but I don't doubt that will wear off quickly as it really does seem like a **** job (as interesting as it is). I'll just focus on the fact that it will get better.

I also think you maybe caught that F1 on a bad day (or week). The hours they work are horrendous, when you're there at 8pm as a nurse, or HCA you're getting paid for being there, as an F1, often you aren't (you're there, you're doing your jobs, but you aren't officially there and therefore aren't getting paid). Now were I work there'll be one F1 that works late in each area, I think it was supposed to help, it really doesn't.

Spoiler

Either way, I think its worthwhile in the end (for me at least), even though I know I'll have my bad/ranting days. I've explored other options so know the grass isn't always greener.

:yep: That sound's about right  I remember shadowing consultants, received so many morning snacks I started to feel a bit guilty :colondollar: However I didn't envy some of the decisions they had to make/conversations they had to have with parents (it was a paeds hospital). Not sure about the GP/health clinics though. I'd imagine the role of a GP can be quite stressful (before you even consider the additional stuff they have to do if their the owner/partner in a practice) :erm:

Thank you very much for this. Really appreciate your experience and opinion on it. It's also very accurate of an F1's job! Thanks again. +rep
Hey, any IB re-applicants out there? If so what are your stats and HL scores?

Also do you think I would be able to go on holiday from the middle of March till beginning of April?
(I have a family wedding abroad but would this be during the interview 'season'?)

If you're lucky and done all your interviews by then, then no problem. But if not I don't think they can arrange another date since the cycle will be finishing by then!

Southampton has switched this year to being UKCAT-heavy - you could think about them. You've got good grades and a very good UKCAT score - the wiki article on 'applying using your strengths' might suggest some more possibilities. Good luck!

from what I'm aware UEA set no cut off for the UKCAT and they look at it alongside your school academic record, GCSE's, A-Levels e.t.c. ... so basically someone with a relatively low score may still be interviewed on the basis of strong academics elsewhere and vice versa, someone with low GCSE's/AS grades (but still within the minimum requirements) may be offered an interview on the basis of a high UKCAT score
